will a NV4500 tranny bolt on to a 3.9L in a 89 sport 4x4??and if it will it should bolt up the the transfer case right?the reason i want to put the 4500 in is because my tranny is ready to take a sh!t and sooner or later i want to put a 360 in the dakota so the tranny will already be there
or wht about a NV3500 i know those can=me in the 91-96 dakotas?

hey dan i'm basically doing the samething, sorta. my dak is a 93 v6. i'm taking out the auto and putting in the stick from a 90 dak. the 90 dak trans is a np2500 and the 93 manual is a ax15. i think the 2 transmissions you are talking about are from a full size truck? they should bolt up. in my research with my stuff the transfer case will bolt up. i also had to get a 93 fly wheel, {$100.00 junk yard, looks new, out of 97 dakota}, i'll have to notch the bell housing for the crank sensor. lukily pedle brackets all bolt in and it helps to have a complete doner. as far as bolting up i wouldnt see a problem for the motor to trans. look into the inputs on both transfer cases. as far as 90 to 93 the inputs were the same. i'm hopeing that i will be able to get a good bit done this weekend on mine, at least the drive train.

Unfortunately, transmissions are not my forte. I can’t offer any help in that area other than to say you’ll need to watch the dimensions. Things like input shaft length, size and spline. Take note of the overall length and height of the gear box or you may end up having to swap drive-shafts as well.

So far eveything has ck'd out o.k. as to working out. I figured the drive shafts are basicaly the least of my wories. If they are to long or short its going to end up at a drive shaft shop. I ran into what I thought was going to be a problem yesterday after i got the auto trans out. They also used two different pilot bearings, from 90 to 93. I stopped by napa to see what there was. the inner diameter is the same but the outer is different. I have to get the inner {insert for crank} piece for the pilot bearing. than ill be able to get the drive train back together and start on the pedle brackets. The bell housing from the 90 3.9 is all the same except for the crank sensor. What Dan wants to do I think should work because the back of the blocks are the same. The only thing I came across as far as the 3.9L in the gen1 dakota was that the factory installed engine with automatic trans did not have the crank drilled so you could'nt swap to a stick. So it might be the same for older v8s also? When we ran the numbers for the 3.9L {gen 1} to a remanufactured motor they came up the same.
