Subject: Whats all the shaking mean?

Message:
As I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to get unstuck in the snow I noticed something new. As I was being pulled, I was on the gas and as I made progress ahead, I felt the whole truck vibrate or shake. What could this be?

Just a thought.. Could it be ice and snow built up on the drive shaft. It could be enough to throw off the balance of the shaft until if falls off or melts. Doe it still shake now? Years ago a buddy of mine was in a similar situation. He high centered on a garbage can sized rock (the only one in the field) and grinded his drive shaft in half. Time for some dedicated snow tires perhaps ???

Sounds like axle hop to me, if your wheels were spinning faster than you were moving. If not, I don't have a clue.

Snow packed in the wheels can make a high speed shake, if you were spinning at over 30-40mph it could possibly cause this.

I think Dan hit it with axle hop. From what he described that sounds like the culprit.

Yeah, I have to agree with Blizz and Dan on this-sounds like wheel/axle hop. I was briefly stuck in the snow(12-14" drift)trying to use only 2WD to go through w/the Powertrax NS in the rearend and had this same thing! Hit 4WD and was right out(have the stock Goodyears and can't wait 'till they're totally worn out to put on some BFG's!)

Jerobiemon, thanks for the kind words! I don't think we'll go with the BFG Mud--most likely the AT's(I've had the BFG AT's on my '70 Power Wagon and they were AWESOME for all around driving--but to do much mud runnin I agree with you!) I really like the looks of the Goodyear MTR's & Yokohama Geolander MT's, but, too agressive if you do much street/highway driving like we do.
