Does anyone know if there are any websights or information regarding dakota prerunners (97-01 body style). I'm interested in various modifications including suspension, fenders, bumpers, drivetrain, etc., etc.

Thanks,

Johnny-

Not to burst your bubble... but... There is nothing readily available for your 4x4 Dakota. I personally own a 2000 2wd Dakota and work for an off-road related manufacturer. There is no fiberglass yet - note I used the word YET. There are a few fiberglass guys out there working on Dakota glass. Bumpers are all being custom built and require custom mounting - bolt on stuff isn't strong enough with the Dakota crinkle-frames. Since you own a 4x4 version of the Dakota, getting suspension travel out of it will be difficult and expensive - if you want it NOW it will all have to be custom.

Yeah, I think my 4x4 Dak would look sweet with a prerunner lift. I am probably going to get the Rancho 3" lift up front and use smaller blocks in the rear to get the prerunner look, and light bar up front. That is all I can think of in the way of prerunner look.

www.glassworksunlimited.com shows that Dakota Fiberglass Prerunner Fenders will be available soon. Haven't really looked around much on Prerunner bumpers and other accessories but we should start to see more parts available for the 97+ Daks, hell, we are in the 5th year of production already! Damn redtape at those companies!

2THEXTRM is almost correct. Glass Works Unlimited already has them available I almost ordered the fenders a while ago but realized I didn't want fiberglass. You can see a picture of the Fenders on my website.. http://www.knobbyman.com/pictures.htm It's the white truck at the bottom. The fenders are *I think..* lifted 4" and flaired 3" but I might have that backwards. But they are available.

Knobbyman, I went to that site and saw they do have flares for the Ram. But, the Dakota fiberglass flares were listed in the "Coming Soon" link.

I emailed them asking them what model years they will fit.

Why would you ever want the back to sit lower in the rear? Dont prerunners have softer valved shocks in the rear and that is why they sit low?

Yeah, kinda. The idea behind a prerunner is a bunch of travel up front and stiff springs to absorb the majority of the impact of landings. The back sits low so it has a lot of down travel. That way when you catch a bunch of air the back end drops down and soaks it up.

RE: prerunner

Message:
Most prerunner suspensions do not have stiff springs... quite the contrary. A properly sprung prerunner will have a relatively soft spring when compared to a normally lifted truck. The more expensive prerunners use bypass shocks that allow them to fine tune the compression and rebound, and most run either progressive or dual springs on a threaded shock, aka the coilover shock. The primary spring is quite soft and the secondary spring is more firm... this allows for a smoother ride. Prerunner suspensions usually don't need to support the additional weight of a fully loaded bed or trailer/towing weights. The rear end on a properly set up truck does not need to be dramatically lower than the front... in fact the more balanced the suspension is the better it will handle offroad. If one end is all squatted out and the other end is lifted to the sky the truck will handle poorly. Lowering the rear end also places more weight over the rear wheels, a benefit for 2wd trucks being driven offroad... but at the same time it takes weight off the front end causing steering to be lighter than normal trucks. A low truck is a fast truck offroad... the lower it rides at normal ride height the better it corners. The ability to absorb the impact after launching the vehicle all depends on the shock and spring combination... not the ride height setup. If anyone has prerunner related questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Aloha

A question that people have seems to center around how high the trucks will get in lifts. I've seen trucks with 30-36" of suspension travel! Most of those trucks are not low at all. They are using really cool bypass racing shocks that absorb an incredible amount of impact and speed. Heck, when you're averaging 40-50 mph over varied desert terrain, you gotta have something to take all of that!

alright guys i did the research and had over half of the parts to make my truck a prerunner. so i think i know a little about the set up and all. i was going to order the fenders from glassworksunlimited.com (and YES their ready for ordering), i had a custom bed cage built, a set of Bilstein 9100 series shocks with King offroad racing springs, a fuel cell from Jegs, a custom Borla exhuast, a custom front an rear bumper, and so on and so on ...... the only reason why i didn't finish the project was becuase i couldn't get around the front suspension. you just can't get enough travel out of it. i've sold all but the custom made parts (it's becuase i'm going to use them in a new project). so if you all need any other questions answered just shot me an email. oh by the way, the Knob Mister (Knobbyman) know what he's talking about and it sounds like Jeff @ PLC does to. best of luck to all that wants to tackle this project.

have a great day,
josh

Does anybody want a prerunner lift for a 2wd dak. It comes with all the heim joints uppers & lowers and king coil overs and limit straps. You will need to have a shop put it on(a custom shop not 4 wheel parts or some crap like that). I have it on with 33's.

Hello, newbie here..
I came across this site in my search for
prerunning/race suspension info for dakotas. I
actually don't have one, or any truck right now
(I sold my previous truck), and am considering
a Dakota among others. Basically, it's all
contingent upon what I can do (actually get a fab
shop to do) with it.

David: I'm definitely interested--can you give
more details? how's the geometry? do you know
how much change in camber as it moves? how's the
bumpsteer, if any? still upper A-arm or uses
J-arm? chromoly or mild steel? travel? etc.

Thanks!

I totally agree with Jeff @ PLC -- most
prerunners/race trucks do sit relatively low and
have smooth rides. In fact, the more "racy" the
truck, the lower it sits and the wider it is, even
those with huge amounts of travel (30+)
--especially those. They may look like they sit
high when the suspension is drooped though, when
in actually they don't, which surprised me when i
first got into this scene. Here are a couple of
pics of Herman Motorsports trophy truck to
illustrate that:

Just coming down from a jump

Sitting height

leaning into a turn

and here are a few pics of some nice prerunners:
Gesier Bros'

Stewart Raceworks' sitting

Stewart Raceworks' flying

(all of them are running on 37" tall tires, btw)

as far as ride & handling goes, essentially the
more built up and tricked up the truck is, the
closer it gets to "handle like a sports car, ride
likes a luxury car"

I do have to apologize for posting the ford
stuff on this board, but it's so hard to find
anything else in that scene! which is how
i came across here in the first place..

So if you haven't already seen this, i thought you
guys might like this very cool (awesome
production), imho, video of the only dodge i've
seen in action:
zipped quicktime (4 mb)
(Note: it may start the player out at twice the
size, which looks terrible; you can switch it back
to Normal size under the Movie menu)

Also, does anyone know of a shop (besides donahoe
perhaps) that has worked on dakotas before in
so. cal?

thanks

hey guys-
i drive a 99 dodge dakota-reg cab short bed two wheel drive-i have done alot of modifications to make my dodge a prerunner-i started out with a fabtech lift(3 inch)it was nice but i wanted more travel so i found a guy that would do the rear end and it ended up giving me about 24 inches of travel through the rear wheels-i will explain what he did____okay first of all he had to make a roll cage for my truck and my spare tire mount and my rear tube bumper is all one piece-(it is really pretty trick)and then with having the long travel-the shocks come through my bed where he has hollowed it out and they mount to the roll cage where is goes back toward the back of the truck-i am using long travel rancho shocks!!
now on my front end i am still using the fabtech spring with the dual shock tower mount and instead of the fabtech shocks i am using two rancho rs9000's with the fabtech shock inside the spring!!!to lift it up a little i am using what they call a preload spring on top of my regular spring so when i hit smaller bumps the pre-load spring works and then when i hit the bigger holes and bumps or goin through the whoops the pre load spring as well as the large spring is workin with the shocks!!!i also have the fenders by glassworks unlimited and riding on all of this is a set of 31x10.50 big o x/t's on a set of eagle 058 rims!!!so if you have any questions on this or want to add your imput you can email me or post your own add!!!!have fun in the desert!!!

thank you thank you. actually its funny you should mention that......i just bottomed out my "grill guard" on a jump and pretty much lost most of my front end. my fab guy and i are going to do a crzy idea. i think that prerunner bars are kinda wimpy, so we're salvaging the top of my "grill guard" and attaching that back to the truck. below that it will be nothing but skid plate from the grill down. should look cool. i'll post picks in about three weeks, when it's all done. it will look very prerunner, but still maintain an agressive "dodge" look. i promise.
