I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this...my front axle breather is leaking (puking)differential fluid. It only does it occasionally during normal driving, but it does it all the time when I am in 4 wheel drive. Is it a problem with my breather? Anybody heard of this? Someone told me a while back that this was a common problem with Daks, but he didn't tell me how to fix it. Any ideas?

This morning, after driving about 15 miles (in 5 degree weather) I stopped for gas. After about 5 minutes I noticed a steady, yet small, stream of fluid coming out from the breather. It actually left a puddle a little bigger than a silver dollar under my truck. I've never noticed this before, only a little fluid on my frame rails. Is it maybe the weather that is making this look worse than before (it is colder so the fluid is thicker)? Also, would it do this if my front axle had too much fluid in it? I will look at the breather tonight, but I really don't know what to look for. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my 97 dak. Mines not as bad though. I was told that I probably had water in the fluid and I would need to change it. I haven't had time to do it though.

I had the same problem on my 99 i took it back to the dealer and they replaced the little white thingy on the end of the breather tube and said it was a common thing. They said it acts like a pressure valve the diff. has pressure build up in it during use and the white thing allows it to keep a certain amount of pressure and to bleed the rest off. They told me that the only problem that was happening due to the fulty thing was the mess on the frame rail.

Are you guys filling the diff your self or is the dealer doing it for you? Because i beleave that the reasont that its coming out of the breather is because eather the breather tube is in the diff fluid and presure is forcing it out or you have over filled it. You might have to reposition the breather in a higher space in the diff.

I have a '99 4X4, and my front breather tube was doing the same thing for a while, but I just had the dealer refill the fluid in the front diff and it hasnt really done it since. I think I remember seeing a TSB for the problem a while back though, and thier fix was to just install a small catch can at the end of the breather, kinda like on a radiator.

I had the same problem during the cold winter months. I found that the white breather plug had ice form on it and the pressure built up causing the oil to leak. I have not had any problems in warm weather though. If you are having this problem in warm waether it could be a restriction in your reather hose or the hose collapsing which would cause the pressure in diff to build and blow it out, You might try replacing breather tube with new one.

The clip that holds my axle breather tube recently slipped out of the chasis bracket and has been dangling about 7 or 8 inches above the ground, accessable to water from rain, undercarriage car washes, etc. Upon checking the differential fluid the dealership found about 2 cups of water which gushed out. I never take the vehicle off the road and have never been in high water. The dealership claimed that this problem wasn't covered under warranty. Has anyone had this problem before or has knowledge of how that much water could get in the differential?

I've just had this problem too on my 1998 Dodge Dakota (85,000 miles)during middle of cold couple weeks this winter. Does anyone know if this is an expensive repair, or do I just need a a fluid change?

Thanks!

I recently purchased a 97 dak in great condition. About 2 wks ago the breather hose had fallen lower than the axel and fluid leaked out. I placed back to orig position, howerver ther are occasional leaks in cold weather. confusing? I today talked with an excellent dak mechanic who told me that dodge makes an exstention kit. Is this going to solve our problem? Maybe it should be a callback from chrystler?
