What The?, you are correct for one thing, if you had the same size tires and changed the rear axle gears, it could work out to the same. I disagree however, about getting better gas mileage. By using bigger tires than
what came on the car/truck you are putting more stress on everthing from the engine to the axle. If you correct the speedodometer and you only went to a slightly bigger tire, then yes you may gain a little fuel mileage, but if you go from a stock tire of say 28 inch diameter, to a 33 then I do think you will lose some fuel mileage because the bigger tires are heavier, and cause the truck to be higher, (more wind reistance). That is why it is recomended to change the axle gearing to make the over all gearing close to what it was when stock, or even lower geared.
Other wise you have done your homework and I feel you do know what you are talking about.
Good Luck

The dealer can absolutely recalibrate to larger tires than stock. Most will say they cannot because they don't scroll to the bottom of the screen and choose "other" for tire size. After choosing "other" the computer will ask for tire size in rev/mile. This information is on the tire manufacturers web site or can be calculated. I personally had to show the tech how to do it with my 33"BFG Mud tires which were 634 rev/mile. The computer will also ask wether you have a 8.25 10 bolt or 9.25 12 bolt rear end. The speed sensor on the 99 Dakota is located in the rear end and has 104 teeth on a 8.25 and 108 teeth on a 9.25. I know this because I installed a ring gear on a 9" Ford rear end when I did my SAS and I still have ABS and all computer trans controls while riding on 37" tires. Remember the 10% rule you must be 10% smarter than the tools that you use.
