I have an '01 CC 4.7 LSD with AWD. I have not had it long but handling in wet weather and deep puddles is very good. Much better than my Chevy with a part-time system. I will be interested to see how it does in ice/snow. Of course we have the option of locking the center differental!

Dry pavement handling seems very tight although I have not really tried to push it. Also I notice no slippage on full throttle launches. Fuel economy is as good as any I have seen on the forums. No downsides so far.

Hey Silverbullet,
Ditto what JP has to say. I have a '01 QC SLT+ with AWD. Only have 3,800 miles. So far it handles great. Gas milage in town sucks for the V8 though but other than that it is great. Haven't had the chance to do any serious offroading yet but hunting season is almost here and I am sure I will get to test it out some then! No tire spin on take off as all the power goes straight to the pavement. Not as fast as a 2x4 or part time 4x4 but I got an old 'stang to take care of that need should it arise!

AWD has become a very vague term. The transfer case in the trucks you guys above own is an electronically shifted, full-time box with a low range. It's a NV244HD.

The transfer case in my 2000 Dakota is a mechanically shifted, full-time box with a low range. It's a NV242HD.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between these transfer cases is the shift mechanism: you've got a dial on the dash; I've got a lever on the floor. I can choose from 4wd, 4 high lock, 4 low lock, and neutral. The choices on the 2001 system are AWD, 4 high, 4 low, and neutral.

Other than nomenclature, these transfer cases should perform identically. The exception is that the electronically controlled box can delay locking its center diff or going to low range if the computer thinks it's a bad idea. But once engaged, everything should be the same on both trucks.

That said, these things are great, especially in winter conditions. I'm very happy with my full-time transfer case.

There's a good explanation of various four wheel drive terminology at:

I have a 00 QC with the 4.7 and really enjoy it. I do not go offroad except during deer hunting season, which it happens to be. No problems to date, will turn over 30,000 miles this weekend.
