Subject: Will 33's fit?

I have a 97 Club Cab Dakota, 5.2L V8 4x4 automatic. My torsion bars are cranked, and I added a leaf in the back to level it out. I just got a 3" Performance Accessories body lift, and I will install it this weekend. I also have AR 15x10.50 deep dish aluminum wheels with 33x12.50 tires. Will they fit, and if yes, how much and where will they rub.
I also wanted to know if there is anything i need to be aware of before i install my lift. One thing I wasn't sure of is whether or not I have to weld an extension on the 4WD shifter.

33" will have slight rubbing that you will feel at full turn left and right. I have a 3" body lift i put on myself with 33" on the stock rims and thats what happened to me. With the shifter... I have a 97 as well 4x4 and it says u have to take the linkage out and cut it in half and weld a piece they give you in between the two pieces. I said fu*k no to that and just went to the home depot and bought a threaded coupler and a threaded rod... I took the knob off the shifter and screwed the coupler on the rod then i cut a little piece of threaded rod and screwed that on the other ewnd of the coupler then just screwed the knob back onto the new piece of coupled rod... I hope you understanbd what I am sayin here... Hope everything works well

Thanks, this will help. As for the shifter i was probably goin to end up doing it like you did, I just wanted to ask around for ideas. I will figure it all out once I finally take it apart and check out my different options. Did you have to bend it back at all?

It will depend on the backspacing of the wheels you are using, and will also depend on your definition of "fit".

My '00 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 has 33x12.50R-15 Goodyear MT/R tires on it, with the stock 15x8 aluminum wheels. I am running these tires with NO lift, but they do rub "a little". The back inside edge of the tire rubs the frame at full steering lock, and the back outside edge of the tire rubs the inner fender liner at just less than full steering lock. I also trimmed a 1" wedge of plastic off of the back edge of the front bumper. The trimming looks very professional, and you need to know where to look to even notice that it is any different than a stock untrimmed bumper.

If all your goal is, is to run 33" tires, then a little creative trimming of plastic, and use of wheels with propper backspacing, is a better approach than a 3" body lift. Your truck will not look lifted with 33" tires and no body lift though. If anything it looks like it has been lowered because there is less space between the fender and the tire.

I am not sure of the backspacing. I just wanted to get a general idea of a few places they will rub, and some remedies. I put the tires on without the lift, and as soon as I turned the will, they hit the lower front corner of the bimper. If they still rub there after I install the lift, I will have to trim that. I have never done any wheel well trimming, so it will be a challenge. The main thing I'm worried about is how it will look. I don't want it to look like a complete hack job, and i don't want to trim a lot away.

Doc, when you trimmed the bumper edge, did you just trim it at about a 45 degree angle?

I started at the top of the back edge of the bumper and scribed a straight line down and forward across the bumper so that I trimmed a max of 1" at the bottom of the back edge of the bumper. I then wrapped the line down around the bottom of the bumper where the amount trimmed decreased to nothing again. Then I just used an air cut off tool to trim off the plastic, and used a square file to smooth it all off when I was done.

I have a 97 Dodge Dak with 33X12.50R15s and like was mentioned before, there is a little rub on the frame at full steering lock....The main prob that I had was the tires would rub the plastic closest to the doors....with the help of a $2.50 utility knife, you can not even tell that I trimmed the plastic by about an inch and a half. That all but eliminated the fart noise if I hit a speedbump to hard....Hope that helps.

hey thanks guys great info. I started the lift last night, took the bed off and drilled holes for the rear bumper. As far as the 4WD shifter goes, I will just used a threaded rod over the shifter and connect it to the knob with a smaller one(hard to explain). In about 2 hrs. I will start on the cab. Will keep everyone posted!
