Subject: Toyotas are better?
IP: Logged

Message:
I went bear hunting last weekend and noticed all the pros were driving either power stroke or cummins diesels with strait axles and leafs up front or they were driving toyotas with IFS up front. What makes those toyotas with IFS more capable offroad than our daks with IFS? The toyotas are supposed to go anywhere, so what makes them so much better?

The one thing that really gives the toyota's an advantage is the underside of the truck itself. Next time you see one look underneath. It doesn't have the shock mounts and tranfer case hanging low to grab rocks and stuff. Plus if it is a TRD Taco, that comes with the electric locker in the rear, progressive coils, Bilstien's....

TRD Tacos (I'm getting hungry again) do have the advantage of ground clearance and a rear locker, but if you want room and comfort inside the cab, don't even think Toyota. I still laugh at their four-door model! The #1 all around truck off road and on, with plenty of size and power, is still the Dak.

Well here's my 2 cents....
I have owned a Toyota and now currenty driving a Dakota..Love my Dak and wouldn't give it up!!!!
But for Hardcore 4 wheeling Toy's will go anywhere a Jeep would go and more. When I had my Toy I ran with a local 4 wheel group made up of Toy/Jeeps/Bronco's. My Toy has been in 3 feet of water and beat to hell with no problems. Their is no way in HELL, that I'm going to try that in my current Dak, 3 inch lift and 32. I have already seen an individual already damage his Dak motor trying to cross water. No, I'm not chicken, I just known the trucks limits and a little more cautions. I can't afford to buy a new motor.

Another thing the Toys have over most other vehicles is that the owners aren't afraid to beat the shyte out of them. People who offroad in Toys are treating them like a little boy woudl with a toy. They don't care if it breaks, they just beat the hell out of it, and the Japs must have done something right, because 9 times out of 10, the Toy will take the punishment and keep on goin.

Know a guy with a 1981 (20 years old!) Toyota SR5 4wd raised...the body looks like crap, all rusted out, but the motor pulls good, even though it's a 4cyl and it'll go just about anywhere. I'd trust that truck offroad more than my 95 Dak...

I too agree that toyotas are better offroad than our Dakotas, that is not my argument. My argument is that the Dak is a better all-around truck, as in on and offroad. If I was going for a serious offroad vehicle, I still wouldnt go for the yota. I would take a cj-5 with some small block stuffed in it any day.

I've logged more hours with fixing toy's on the trail than helping out with any other vehicle. They make a good engine but weak parts. We're up twice a month with mine, and others', Jeeps, buddies' broncos, and some toy's. I've even taken my dakota. When crawling, my dak did great. Stock, 31s, 4.7, 4x4 QC. If you can wheel, you're better off in a dakota, parts are stronger, than a toy. We're always stopping to fix Toy's. If you can't wheel, well then get into a yota and bounce off of everything in sight. That's about all they're good for. It's only the ones that have replaced theirs with some american parts that don't slow us down. I'm always winching those Japanese pickups with my Jeep, and quite frankly, the only use my winch has seen.

And c'mon fellas, go ask your girlfriends or other 'smart/hot' women :-)..."Which would you rather be seen in, a 4x4 dakota or a 4x4 toyota?" I'll bet you they'll pick our sexy vehicles. :-).

Live long, dakota owners.

WELL I can tell you my 86 Toyota 4runner will out wheel my 2001 QC any day of the week. My 4runner has more articulation than my QC, more ground clearance, and a tighter steering radise(sp). My Toy wore 31X10.5 Desert Duller BFG tires from the factory. The Dak has more comfortable interior, more powerful engine and a better radio.

I think that 4runner had a solid front axle right?? that'd explain the articulation. Ground clearance on the QC sucks because of the IFS.. 4Runner has a solid axle wich explains why it has the QC beat...

Replace the Cheesy axle with a Dana 44 and your good to go.

But.. Like Quadman said.. Who really cares?

and i bet there are people out ther ein daks that can our wheel you in any toyota, its alot in the drives know how and experience, but if it has about 2 feet more clearence the factor leans to the one with more ground clearence, and what ever happened to the dodge off roadster? lol, dumba$$ corporate people would not knwo wwhat it takes to 4wheel, i think all it had were heavier skid plates, more skid plates, larger tires/rims/ more clearence and a heavier axle, but i dont think they went to the extream that we want to take them to

come on people, 2 ton axle at least
lol

Hey I started 4 wheelin when I was 15 years year old on army tank trails. I was taught how to 4wheel and have 4 wheeled that 4 Runner every weekend since 1992 when I got it. Prior to that I used to use a buddies Toy with 44" tires and every upgrade trick under the sun. I have shot peened and welded pumpkins on trails to make it home, welded drive shafts........ I am a die hard 4Wheeler. Rock crawling is my favorite form of wheeling. I have 4Wheeled in Germany, Georgia, Texas and Michigan. I wish I had the solid axle 4Runner. I have IFS with a few Tweaks!!!!! P.S. I bought my Dak mostly for wife! I realy like it alot!!!! I do wish that Dodge had given it more articulation. Have you guys looked at how short the upper A-Arm is? Rancho Realy Realy has to do something for us!!!!!! This truck would rock with more ground clearance and articulation. I am not talking crazy RTI numbers here just. I was thinking an additional 3"-4" in each driction for a total of 6"-8" more inch's of total travel. A nice winch bumber front and rear would also be nice. I can make realy a strong bumbpers but I would rather buy one! I can not make nice compound curces very well so I end up with bumbers that look fine on a tow truck!! I am makeing nice skid plates from Chevy HD 4x4 skid plates. I got them for free so I am going to armor all of the critical powertrain parts.

I would agree about the lift for the Dak. It is really capible off road but the entrence and exit angle of the truck sucks. And the wheel base is really long for a CC anyhow. So the breakover angle sucks too. Gotta remember This is a dodge site so they are a little bias.

Hey if I did not like dodge I would not be here. I do own a dodge. I also belive in being truthful. If they were completely satisfied with their Dak they would not be here!!!This board would not be here if everyone was satified with their truck they way the factory built it.You are so right about the poor aproach, departure and break over angles.I took the bumpers off of one of my trucks to get better angles. I transversed a mound of gravel that came up to my crotch one wheel at a time and the front arm's ran out of travel and my rockers got scratched. It also started to lift the rear tire off of the ground on the same side. This is when I noticed the short a-arms and large bump stops. This is a HWY/BLVD cruiser. It might do well in sand but I do not go to the dunes often. This trcuk 2001 Quad Cab is crying out for articulation!!!!

The rear actually moves quite a bit. More than I thought. The front is not all that good that is for sure. I went through a little ditch to see how much it moves. I like crawling. So I need clearance. I did Poison Spider in Moab without a problem. Did Lions Back with out a problem. I saw a 4 Runner this year at jeepers Safari go off Lions Back. I just shook my head at all paties involved. And if you mention anther brand of vehicle I have gotten flamed hard.

I will agree that experince and some skill combined with a good spoter are all realy important!!!! It does help though if your vechile will perform. I am sure it would be much harder for Ivan the Iron Man Stuart to Win the Baja 1000 in my beat up 86 4Runner then his fully race preped truck so equipment does matter at some point.

all i gotta say is lmao@dodges being better than toyotas offroad. they may be more comfortable, but i garuntee my tacoma could go SO many more places a dodge could go. and i garuntee it could go everywhere a jeep could go. also, toyotas are WAY more reliable. i know a lot of people with toyotas that have well over 200k miles and still runs like its brand new. and as for 4 runners having a solid front axle, youre an idiot. and one more thing, why the hell would dodge make a truck as big and heavy as a dakota with IFS???
