Subject: need help with tires please

hey guys/gals..I'm looking to have new tires put on my 03 quad cab dakota. i currently have 265 70r 16 and i want to move up to a larger tire. The guys at Kal Tire tell me that the tires i currently have are the largest i can go. Has anyone been able to fit anything larger than a 265 70r 16 under their rig without rubbing?

I am looking at putting on the Cooper Discoverer STT's. I have heard they are one of the best off-road ties out there. I was hoping to get 265 75r 16s (or bigger) under my truck without doing a lift.

I know tires have probably been discussed many times, but I have had trouble finding a consistent answer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks...Tim

If it's a 4x4, 265/75-16 tires will fit fine with a few turns of the torsion bar adjuster to raise the front a bit for clearance. If you want to put larger tires and then go off-road with them, you should definitely consider a lift of some kind, or those larger tires will have the suspension beating the snot outa your bumpstops. Remember, all suspensions give and flex, so what may not rub on the street, may rub quite a lot in some off-road situations.

I put 265/75-16 Procomp all terrains on mine. No problems and no rubbing after a torsion bar adjustment. But I don't do any serious off-roading.

Something to keep in mind:

The Procomp tires I bought are a bit more rounded where sidewall meets tread. http://www.procomptires.com/allterrain.html

A tire like the BF Goodrich T/A-KO has pronounced corner where sidewall meets tread. http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/overview/all-terrain-t-a-ko/44.html

I mention this, because it's probably the main reason for those inconsistent answers. With different brand/purpose tires of the same size, some will rub and some will not, because of the tire profile. Remember the width measurement is the width of the widest part of the tire, not the width of the tread.
-----------

I have the 265/75-16 (32x10.5x16) Procomps on a 2004 Dakota 4x4, and 32x11.5x15 T/A-KO tires on a 1998 Tacoma 4x4.

The T/A-KOs have very good tread life, but it's a relatively hard compound, doesn't flex well, and for me has been a bit tricky in wet or low-traction situations, especially with the open differential on the Tacoma. On the positive side, they have built-in rim protection for off-road situations.
An excellent and tough truck tire.

The Procomps work better for me in the low-traction situations here in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Impressive snow traction, and a slightly softer compound that flexes a bit better than the T/A-KO. My old self likes a bit more cushion between the road and the seat these days.
Another excellent tire.

There are many excellent tire choices out there.
Happy hunting.

Thx for the info SteveJ. Thats good advice, but I still am unsure about adjusting the torsion bars simply to fit a slightly larger tire. After all, the worst place to have tire clearance issues is when your on a trail miles from anywhere and bouncing the tire off the wheel wells. I do go off roading a bit, in fact most roads I travel are gravel and bumpy(northern Ont.). My truck stays in 4 wheel drive nearly all winter long too. I think I`ll stick with the 265.70.16.

As far as tire brand goes..i`m still looking at Cooper but thanks for the info about the BFGs and Procomps - i`ll check them out too.

Taker Easy!

Staying with stock size is probably best.
Those Cooper tires look like they'll take you anywhere. Nice, aggressive tread pattern.
