Message:
my torsion adjust bolts are run all the way in, does this mean I have to back them out to get lift? I have a plow for it but it squats to much. As far as I know nobody has adjusted them before.

Backing them out will lower the truck.

Thought so but you never know sometimes things go difrent. So they are all the way up I have been told that if you back them all the way out and take the weight off the front wheels you can pull the torsion bars out and turn them then put them back in the keyway in anew position giving you more lift. Is that true? They dont look any different on any side.

If no one has adjusted them before, they shouldn't be run all the way in. Lying under your truck looking up at the face of the bolt turn it clockwise. Easier if you jack up the front of the truck to take some weight off.

Yes I know clockwise thanks. But if there are no more threads the bolts are all the way tight. There fore leaving no room to turn the clock wise. As to the reason I have posted the second question.

Are you sure you understand what you are looking at ? The heads of the bolts should be tight against the surface; they are moving that surface along with them (that isn't the threaded area) to make the adjustment.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Ya if u wanted you could jack the truck up take the weight off the torsion bars and unbolt the torsion block and install them in a different keyway but u will put more stress on the torsion bars if u can even get the bolt started. And if they have been cranked all the way up someone has messed with them. Should be about an inch of bolt showing between the top torsion block and frame crossmember

If the torsion bars have weakened to the point where you have absolutely no adjustment left, it's time to consider replacing them. Reindexing the stock keyway is a failure looking for a place and time to happen.

I was just wondering if the guy that has an inch of space has a v6 and the guy with no space has a 318 or 360. They both share the same torsion bars. mine are topped out as well with the 360 and my buddies v6 can still be jacked several more turns. Apples to apples.

I thought the V-6 Dakotas came with lighter wt torsion bars? Otherwise, they would experience a much stiffer ride...bad for sales...

While it may be apples to apples, keep in mind there are several different varieties of apples.

There is a difference between the V6 and V8 torsion bars, while physically the same size, there are differences in the weight & spring rates. Obviously, the V8 bars are rated differently for the additional weight of the V8.

Also, you can have two exactly identical trucks parked side by side and one will have the adjuster bolts cranked more than the other. There is something like a +/- 2% acceptable tolerance in the spring rates of the bars new. While hypothetically both trucks could have 2000lbs rated torsion bars, because of that loose tolerance, one can have bars that are slightly stronger than the other. The truck with the weaker bars will require a little more adjustment of the bolts to achieve the same ride height as the truck with the stronger bars.
