twice now while wheeling, if i hit a puddle going to fast my engine stalls out and i misfire when i start it back up. i am either sucking up water in my intake but when i recently changed my spark plugs i noticed that they were completely covered in mud, from the spark plug boot down to the gap. could my K&N cold air intake be the culprit or is water somehow leaking into my cylinders through the plugs? the last thing i need to do is blow my motor out in the woods cause i sucked up some water. any wway to better waterproof my engine?

Water cannot get into cylinders through the plugs.
CAI? Maybe. Where's the inlet, and how deep are these "puddles"?.

Are your splash guards missing or tore on the inside of your fenders? Most likely your plug wires are leaking and the water makes them cross fire. One thing you can try if your trying to fix cheap. get a spray can of water displacer and spray the wires and cap real good . Do the coil also and maybe other connections you can see like sensors. HD silicon,Ignition dry are a couple that work well. Avoid WD-40. It dries leaving a heavy film behind and collects dust like crazy that is hard to clean off.

I did the same thing in my 99 318 4x4.

It sucked big time i had to wait about 10 minutes for whatever i got wet to dry out. Scared the S#!T out of me too it was the first time i had taken it out and i thought i had hydro-locked the engine.

All i did to fix it was when i changed the spark plugs and wires, and the distributor cap and rotor i loaded all of the wire ends (cap and plug sides of the wires) with dielectric grease. Also put a bunch inside of the distributor cap on the contacts. I have been through the same hole twice now at roughly the same speed. The latest time the water was deeper than before so i couldnt get as much speed going.

The hole i did it in the water was roughly 27in deep because my rear end was almost all the way under.

well i did replace my plugs and wires but i haven't gone wheeling in the mud yet since then so hopefully that will have taken care of it. the puddles i was hitting probably brought the rocker panel to within an inch or two of being submerged.

Story time. Had a friend(died a few years ago) that loved to race through deep water. Unknown to him someone placed a very big rock that had to take 2 guys to carry in the deep part so it was all under water just barely. He hit that rock doing his thing and did over 2,000 dollars damage to his Jeep. Insurance wouldn't cover it. The adjuster examined the site and wrote it up as happening on a Jeep trail and obviously excessive speed.

recently i went puddlejumping and sucked about a gallon of water into the stock intake and it died on me. pulled the plugs and oil pan and the piston rings were in pieces, huge mess. took it to the dealer and told them "the story" and they put a new motor in under warranty. now i have an AFE CAI and that doesnt happen anymore

Wait a minute you took your hydrolocked dakota to a dealer and told them that you locked the motor up while 4-wheelin and took it apart yourself to check it first before bringing it to them to check out, and they still gave you a new motor under waranty?

If so you are one lucky SOB. Around my area, for starters a hydrolocked engine is an insurance company claim not a warranty item, and most any dealer will not cover any item that has been taken apart or modified (outside of a dealer at least). This mainly applies to drivetrain components though.

Just to throw in my input.. i know CAI help on making more power but they are closer to the frame and more open than stock... deep water crossing could be bad news... I run stock with a K&N though its not the best.. i'd rather know i'm not going to hydrolock going into deep water.. i've had water up to my bumper and kept going no problems... GOD I LOVE Pre 94 GEN 2's Less electronics to worry about.

dont you mean pre-96?
there really want much more wiring on the 1990 stuff vs the 1995 stuff

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Warranty does not cover OFF ROADING DAMAGE of any kind.Regardless where you was, water hydro locked is a driver error, not a break down. In other words. driving to fast for conditions. I don't care who the dealer is. If he in fact did give you a motor it will be paid for by him, not dodge.
