I hav e a 99 dakota sport 4x4 with a 3in rancho lift and a 318. I noticed the last time i looked under the hood to check the fluids that my front diff has been pushing gear oil out the vent tube. Anyone out there have this problem or know how to stop it?

Use a longer hose raised up higher. That way as fluid is kicked up into the hose, it will run back down hill into the pumpkin.

The vent tube already comes up to the top of the radiator support cant go up any higher without cutting a hole in the hood.
I just bought the truck from a dealership that I work at little less than 6,000 miles ago. All fluids were changed during the pre-delivery inspection.
The only things I could think of were some water contamination or the diff is over-heating. I had the same problem on a 92 dakota 4x4 that I just sold but that was being caused by the vacuum disconnect actuator wasn't disconnecting. As soon as I got that fixed the fluid stopped coming out. On my 99 however the front axle doesn't have a disconnect of any sort. and other than the lift and tire size the truck is completely stock.

Sorry, but you left this door wide open...

You work at a dealership...and you are asking questions here? I don't care if it is a Mitsubishi dealership, the mechanics there should be able to tell you what is wrong. Offer to buy one of them (I'd probably ask around who is the 4x4 expert 1st)a soda and candy bar, then pick their brain for a minute. Most would give you a least a couple options to check. maybe it is simply overserviced (too full).

The only ideas that the guys i work with have given me were the ones that i mentioned above (and they didnt cost me a soda or a candy bar), water intrusion or overheating. One told me to make sure that the front end was disconnecting when i took it out of four wheel drive but the axle has no disconnect. Its a Chevy / Toyota dealer and the only axles that we work on are axles that have disconnects in them, either central axle disconnect(GM) or manual locking hubs(Toyota). Neither GM or Toyota have a problem like this that i or anyone that i work with are aware of, and the only axles that we have seen so far and have any experience with that dont have disconnects are all wheel drive models. As i had said the 92 dakota that i just sold had the exact same problem because of a faulty disconnect actuator that was causing the axle to stay engaged at all times causing the axle to overheat. Personally i have no experience with axles i am an engine and front end guy. The dealer is a small one we only have 8 techs myself included and the 2 that have the most experience with axles are both out on injury leave, one for shoulder surgury and the other for knee surgury.
I just replaced the gear oil again for the hell of it last night no change.

Mine is a 99 4x4 bought new. No such problem. Also I never had the cover off yet. I wonder if there is some sort of splash cover fits over that hole on the inside and it fell off or got bent some how. If you have a book, take a look

Don't know of any sheilds or fluid directors where the vent goes into the axle tube but i've never had the axle shaft out of a dodge independent front axle. The vent is all the way to the passenger side of the axle just beside the cv axle flange so i doubt there is any thing on the inside.

Had another thought at work today, do the front axles take a different type of oil, synthetic maybee? Looked on alldata and they say 80-90 GL5 oil in the front and the rear. Asked a guy that works for Ford if he had any ideas and he said that some Fords will do this if you dont put synthetic oil in the front diff but they wont do it to the extent that mine is. The nearest Dodge dealer (over 45 miles away) wont give me a straight answer, all they know how to tell me is why dont you bring it over to us so we can see what's going on.
Any help is appreciated.

Ok tried the Ford guys idea and put 75-140 synthetic gear oil in it. BIG MISTAKE leak got worse big time actually got the bottom of the hood wet now.

However, talked to a different Dodge dealer than the one I tried to talk to before and they sent me a technical service bulliten for this problem. Don't have the tsb number with me now left the copy they sent me in the parts dept of my dealership. I will post the tsb number when i get home from work tomorrow. Basically what the bulliten says is to add what appears to be a fluid reservoir (Dodge calls it a canister vent) to the top of the vent tube. It looks pretty cheesy to me but at this point as long as it works, i dont care. The parts guy at the other dealer knew exactly what my truck was doing when i gave him the part number for the canister so i'm assuming that he has seen a lot of trucks with this problem.

The tsb# is: 03-04-99 Front Differential Vent Weeping

Problem seems to be gone now had the vent canister on for two days now no fluid has gotten out.
