They are making a metal on metal noise. Well just the drivers side one right now but i'm pretty sure the other one will start soon. 99 4x4 95,000 miles. i sprayed white grease on the ends, still makes noise. do i have to remove them to better grease the ends? Could they get loose somehow? I think they were cranked up by original owner but not sure.

Klinking sound? Klunking sound? Scraping sound? You don't give much in the way of details/ information. When I put my suspension lift in I had to take the lower control arms off with the torsion bars in tact because they would not easily come out. I own a 95' and did the lift in 2003. All torsion bars I have seen are very tight in the socket ends. Is the noise coming from the front or back end of the torsion bar? Does it make "the sound" going down the street, over speed bumps, hitting pot holes, when you hit the brakes/ gas? Have you jacked the corner up so the wheel is off the ground? Is anything loose with the wheel suspended? There are many things to check my friend. These are a start.

Are you sure the noise is from the torsion bars ? I've had many vehicles with that suspension and never heard any of them make noise.

yes it makes the sound going down the street (only when going slow or i just can't here it when going fast), braking, reverse, sometimes on bumps. I jacked each side up to check everything out (ball joints, tie rods/ends, pitman arm, idler arm, center link, sway bar bushings, brakes, all good).Front end of Torsion Bar on driver side making the noise only. I sprayed all ends of both bars with white grease and the noise is still there. After I checked it out I thought i might have missed something so i brought it to a trustworthy shop and they told me it was the front of the driverside torsion bar making the noise and showed me. They told me they just do that with the amount of miles you have on your truck (95,000) and didn't give me a good explanation on how to make it stop. So i'm just wondering what i have to do to make the noise go away. The shop guys weren't too concerned with it so it must not be a big deal, like my truck will fall apart or something?

The "sound" sounds more like a universal joint to me, but I am not there, so I have to take it at printed value. If it is a continual or repetitive noise, it is most likely a u-joint. I have heard that sound on more than one vehicle. I had one that had a squeek at low speeds. Pumped them all full of grease, still squeeked. Shot the double u-joint on the front of the transfer case(suspected it all along) with some WD-40 and the squeek went away...until a couple days after it had rained. Shot it again, and again it went away. It was one of the rubber boots on a cup end squeeking.

Easy steps that really don't cost anything.
If they haven't been greased in a while I would:
1. Do that 1st, because they probably need it.
2. Drive it and see if you have fixed it. Still squeeks?
3. I would hit one u-joint with spray then drive it.
4. If the squeek is still there, hit the other one.
5. Repeat if needed until you have got them all.

The spray is not gonna hurt anything. But it will possibly help you isolate your problem. Worst case is you hit them all and your truck still squeeks. Best case, you find the guilty culprit and determine if it needs to be changed or not...and possibly go back to the shop and show them what they don't know about troubleshooting.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Bill. Will try today and see what happens. The sound is only coming from the drivers side and thats where the front drive shaft is. Definetly makes sense.

So where they showed you, you could actually see where there could be play in the torsion bar ? That should be a snug fit. I wouldn't consider them a "trustworthy shop" unless I could see that for myself. I've had several torsion bar suspended vehicles with more miles than you; and like I said before, I've never seen that. Even my old '69 Barracuda that I had in the seventies, when the rusty torsion bar mount ripped loose from the frame, it was still tight on the torsion bar.

They just heard the noise and said it was coming from the drivers side torsion bar, they could be wrong. i think it might be coming from the front driveshaft now that bill brought that to my attention. i'm going to check it out further when i get off work in 30 mins.

That u-joint is more likely your problem then, not the torsion bar. Might want to change your opinion of how trustworthy that shop is...

I know this is an old post, but someone may red it anyway. I had the same issue, but I have a Rancho lift in my truck. The noise was comming from the torsion bar drop bracket. There is a top bolt and two side bolts. I tightened them up and the noise went away. You may have the same problem with your tuck. Torsion bar bracket bolts, check them out.
