Hey guys, I was at Discount Tire this weekend and was reading about tire siping. just wondering if any of you guys have had it done to your tires and wondering if it was worth it or not. I got a 4x4 so its not like I need more traction but figured why not do it if it works. Thanks a lot

I recently purchased GY Wrangler MT/R's (305/70R16). These are like a mud tire, but referred to as a maximum traction tire. They are not siped. I was being talked out of buying mud tires and these tires because they said I would be all over the road when it rains or on ice.

In CT we just had a nasty ice storm and rain storm. My tires were awesome. I say screw the siping. I don't see a problem without it.

Siping has been around for a long time. We used to do it at home for bias ply snow tires (that's how long ago it was) All you need is a simple $25 tire tool and a few hours of your time. It is hard work. It can make a huge differance in performance in bad weather. Somebody on this board even gets better performance on dry pavement.

By placing lateral cuts in the tread surfece, you're allowing the rubber to flex a little more for better surface contact, and the edges will dig in to snow and ice a little better. The down side is that it weakens the tread block a little weak, so you might get chunking if it's not done right.

This is especially helpfull for a mud tire with big tread blocks. Some tires (like the Michelin LTX M/S) don't benifit from this.

Been siping tires for as long as I can recall > It makes a terrific differance in traction in starting out and stopping both on ice > Also does a great job on icey highways > I have never had rubber break off due to siping > And the bonus is longer tire life , contrary to what you might think < Once you try this , the first time you start to notice your moving just fine while everybody else is fighting it You well never be without it > One thing > I do not race or do burnouts so you guys may have differant findings then I do >

So many problems > So little time
