I am having a problem getting the 4WD on my 92 Dakota to engage. When I pull the floor lever to engage everything seems fine. For some reason the front axle is not engaging. I replaced the transfer case last year and it is shifting fine. I drives fine in 2WD , 4H, and 4L but the front does not engage. any ideas.

What indications do you have that the front is not engaging?

My indications that it is not engaging are several, first of all when 4wd is engaged turning sharply left or right, there is a different feel than when in 2wd. Secondly, after suspecting that the front diff was not engaging, i have tried to pop the clutch while in 4wd and only the rear tires spin. Third, while engaged in 4wd I jacked the rear end up to see if the front would pull the truck off the jacks and it did not, either in hi or lo.

Let's isolate the issue, is the problem in your front diff or your transfer case.

First step, with all four wheels raised off the ground, the truck in 4hi and 1st gear, idleing, does the front drive shaft turn.

If it does yet the front wheels don't, the problem is with your front diff. Remember, you're front is an open diff so you'll only get one power to left front like that.

If it doesn't, you're problem is in the TransferCase.
