Subject: 318 vs 360 mpg and offroading

My 93 Dakotas 318 is near its end, and it is time to start thinking what engine to go with that meets my needs..

So a little advice from you people is needed!!!

The style of driving I do is mainly offroading/rock crawling and a bit of highway. The truck sits on 33s and maybe one day 35s.

Fuel milage is a concern being the price of fuel keeps going up, and most of my trips are over 500 miles. But I don't want to lack the power!!

Any tips/info on the two engines and parts to use would be great.

Thanks

Well tree i dont know much about the 360 but mines a 94 with a 318 and i use it stricktly for prospecting so i only drive it about 6 times a year, mostly or should i say 90 percent highway 10 percent offroad i like my 318 because it gets between 14-17 mpg depending on how loaded down with gear i am,ive got 146K miles on it and it just screams down the highway with plenty of power and when i am off road im moving along alot slower anyway so i like the 318,but as they say can you ever have too much power?I dont know what the mpg on the 360 would be http://www.cardomain.com/ride/857674/1

I got close to 200,000 hard miles on it. I've gone through 3 trannys, 2 tranfer cases, 2 rear ends, lots of front end parts, rads, etc. I play hard with my Dakota. Some people can't believe where i've been with it.

As for my tired 318 it's either rebuild it or put in a stroker kit or go with a 360 and still having good power and milage. Nobody can give me a good answer on what root to go and parts to use.

So some help is needed!!!

I'm really not sure what you should do with it.

I don't know enough about the differences in your options.

Maybe someone can chime in with some advantages and disadvantages between a 360 versus a stroker 318.

When it comes to off roading , 318 or 360 won't be an issue unless your in a race to the top and even at that driver ability is going to win it > Here's something I never seen in here as yet > TRACTION > All things being equal a v6 will out traction a v8 and a 4 banger will out traction both of those > Reason being , the transfer of power to the wheels is in jerks , one jerk each times a cylender fires > The more cylenders you have the smother the delivery to the tires and the easier to spin the tires > Or > The farther apart the jerks the better the tire takes a new bit between jerks > If you don't think this is real you haven't done much 4 wheeling in the tuff stuff

See if you can find the torque and HP vs. rpm curves for these engines. Torque is the actual turning force. Power (HP) is the rate at you can apply the force. If you're going to be turning fairly large tires go for the torque. You get more force to the drive line at lower rpm's.
