Subject: torsion bar once and for all

Ok i have been reading so much about the torsion bar so today i went out to my 2003 4.7 V-8 club cab truck but then i realized i have just read about the torsion bar and no one really gave pictures or a how to article on doing it so if anyone could supply one that would be great. I also have a few questions what exactly does a torsion bar do? Is it the bar running of the A arm on each side and you just tighten the bolt at the end? What are the diadvantages of tightening the torsion bar? do I need to have the truck jacked up before i can tighten them? Any help would be great?

Well I used to have a link to a good write up on them. What you are describing is them though. Yes you crank on that bolt to give a tighter twisting motion on them the by increasing the downward force on the a-arm thus raising the height of the truck, of course there are more technical terms and explainations but that pretty much sums it up.

So once you crank these to get the 1-2 " or more of lift depending on how much bolt thread you have to crank on, you will need to align it (some will say you wont) and yes there will be increased pressure placed on the bar and the ride will become stifer. It may tend to wear some of the suspension components more but a good set of Moogs greasable ball joints is a good easy mod if you have not had them upgraded already.

The only other part to this is if you do decide to crank the TB's make sure you have a breaker bar and the right size socket, dont use an air gun, measure the height on each side before you start, Jack up one side, secure it, Crank a few turns, let it down measure and repeat on the other side. You may not have to crank one side as much as the other and as long as you have the beginning measurement you will get it even.

You can always put a block in back if you get enough height out of it to level it back off and Daks come nose down already.

Hmmm all that and no picture

Jacking the vehicle up makes it easier to turn the bolts once some of the weight is off the bars; but I'm not aware of any reason not to use an air wrench.
