im done looking for stuff for my dak. no good krawling lifts, very few engine mods, very few bumpers and everything is at such a high price! the rancho 3 in lift is wut like 1300 and i can get a xj 6.5 lift for that much. im gonna keep it as a daily driver and to transport my bikes to my races but for offroading-screw it. Im buying myself a 600 1986 jeep cherokee and decking it out. dont get me wrong i love my dack but its such a hassle to get it ready for a good long, rocky trail ride.

go to hansonenterprises.com for great custom made bupers that will carry a winch. they dont show dak bumpers on the site, but have some great ones if you call them, ask for Sharon or Paul. i know what you mean about finding stuff for a dak but if you hang in there, and set up your dak, it will go anywhere the jeeps go. I have a 9.25 full detroit in the rear of mine and it goes way more places than un-locked jeeps can even think about.

I agree with both of you but a Dakota will never flex enough to really wheel.

I had my Dakota Decked out with the Rancho lift and the Detroit and it went everywhere but the flex was crap.

Now I run a ZJ Grand Cherokee, wheelin in luxury.

An XJ Cherokee is also sweet but a Grand flexes better since it has coil springs all around.

A XJ will have coil springs in front and Leafs in back, prolly a Dana 30 front and a 35 rear. Inline 6 and you are ready to rock a RE superflex lift of 4.5 or so will put you on 32's comfortably 33's with some trimming. Super 35 in back and what ever you like in front and you are going anywhere.

The Grands have an issue if you get a v-8, it is called an aluminum Dana 44 no locker options for the rear. If you get a ZJ with a inline 6 then you are good with the 30 in front and 35 in the rear. If you are gonna go real hard core the 35 will only last so long. if you stay on 32's though it will go most anywhere and last long.

Here is my ZJ on 33's

I'm building up an 89 Dodge Power Ram 150. 318 v8, solid axles, np435 4-speed, and putting a 4" lift on it this weekend. I decided to build it up after I almost blew the motor in my dakota. I don't want a dakota with a crapped out motor when I still owe a lot of money on it.

forexfour, im in love with ur zj. ive been on ur website before and ur videos and pictures have helped me alot. Im 16 and i recently bought myself a 2002 dakota 4.7L V8 4X4. my dad helped me buy it but i paid for most of it. i have 600 dollars saved up since i bought the dak and ive been looking for a capable rig i can make into an awesome wheeler. ive made up my mind on sumthing around a 1986 xj because they r cheap and lots of possibilities. i will be swapping out the motor if need be and i will be installing a 6.5-8in lift with either full-traction or rubicon kit. i want to do it all myself and i will be able to because my school has a really nice metals shop and the teacher is cool about stuff like this. ill be doing all the fab. and everything myself and i cant wait. do u think i shud save for zj or just go with the xj?

XJ's are sweet, and prolly the better way to go. A ZJ is wheelin in luxury and can have some issues, Like the D44 Aluminum.

You are definatly on the right track with the XJ Idea. A budy of mine and a member here, Thrash, Just did Axle upgrades on his XJ he bought for $500.00. He calls it cheap jeep, and he is full width now and gonna run 35's for now but could run 37's. I would say a XJ with an I-6 4.0 will be a good start and work it how you like from there.

Right now my ZJ is mostly a tow rig now for the GF's YJ ( wrangler) locked on 33's. We take that and beat it up and just use mine for extraction and milder runs.

Go to www.naxja.com North american XJ association or something like that loads of info. www.mallcrawlin.com has people with good info to but they think they are the gods of the ZJ and XJ world and can be pretty harsh, worse than this place. The XJ site might be a better place to start.

It has all been thought of or already done what ever you can imagine. I know quit a few guys with some sweet ass XJ's and they are a sweet rig to build and real easy.

It's great wheeling the dakotas at first, and they do offroad well, but you gotta realize these trucks were designed primarily to be street queens. If you know how to drive and have some knobby tires you can go lots of places, but the ifs in these trucks makes axle upgrades nearly impossible. My dakota still sees offroad, but right now I'm building up the power ram woods truck. Definitely much sturdier rig. The only advantages dakotas have is that they fit perfectly on jeep trails. I've even taken my kota on quad trails before. Sure it scrapes the paint a little, but who cares? It's a 4x4 truck.

I am the guy forexfour was talking about with the 85 xj....started out as a cheap jeep but the project got out of hand and so did the cost....here is where I am at now with the xj....dakota is being used for towing now....

it is full width on 37in boggers....stretched the wheelbase and built my own suspension....I also did everything myself which helped keep the cost down, so if you have fab skills you are paying only for the parts....I am only 21 and did this while in school and working full time in about 5 months.....

If you want to hook up with on a run you really need to go over to

Off Road World

and join up and go to the CA chapter.

This is where we plan most of the runs I we go on. Or My site has a link to planned trips. We do atleast one a month somewhere in CA.

Yeah I am still around jsut not much to add over here anymore. Same questions and answers, some things never change.

You heep guys kill me...LOL

But I agree with all of it. I to get frustated with the cost and lack of parts for my 2000 QC. I do run some bolt on engine mods-K&N cold air, superchip, TB on the way- and a rancho lift but the cost is out of hand.

chris, I think I'm down for the lockwood run. I let you know.
