Hey all! I'm in the process of a Solid Axle Swap into my 1998 4x4 Sport. Next step is looking at a Cummins 4BT. The question I have is that I have the NV3500HD and I'm wondering about the bellhousing. Most guys doing swaps on Jeeps and stuff are using the NV4500, which has different bellhousings available to bolt-on. Theoretically, the NV3500HD should be able to handle the torque of the small diesel. The 3500HD is rated (by most sources "conservatively") at 340 ft-lbs of torque. The stock 4BT puts-out (yeah...I said "puts-out") just over 300 ft-lbs. So theoretically the tranny should be able to handle it. Does anybody know of a company that makes an adapter to put the 3500 against a 4BT? I figured this post would be a longshot since I've been researching this for a year or so...but figured it doesn't hurt since I've never seen it asked on this board.
Thanks!

Best bet is to contact Advance Adapters....they make just about any adapter you need.

I'm curious what are you going to do with your stock 318 when you complete the swap?

Not sure... Honestly, the diesel swap is just in the planning stage (as it has been for a few years). The first line of business is going to be my solid axle swap. I'm going to be moving to Alaska in a few months, so it really depends on what's available up there. If I can't find a suitable diesel replacement I might be forced to keep the current engine for a few more years till I get back to the lower 48. The motor's got 115,000 miles on it now, so I'd like to go diesel before I'm forced to suck it up and rebuild my 318. When I get my axles in, the tranny and the motor will be the only things that haven't been replaced or rebuilt, and the plan is to replace both of those at the same time.

Isn't that the engine people been getting from the "Frito Lay" trucks or something?

It would be COOL just to have converted to such a mod that gets over 20MPG EASY. But I'd miss the high revving roar of my V8 :-)

If I were to ever buy a USED V6 Dak or something (for a future work vehicle) I'd think that mods was great though. The fual tank we have would go about twice as far in the city!

Yeah, that's part of the idea. 20mpg would be no problem. Probably wouldn't break any speed records, but that's really not what I'm going for. The Cummins 4bt is the engine that you hear guys getting out of old bread vans and stuff. It's a 4-cyl turbo diesel. Depending on the model and year, the engine puts-out +/-300 ft-lbs of torque. Yes, I know that my 318 with the headers and all the other crap is putting out more than that, but the torque of the Cummins is available not too far off idle. Makes it good for the trails.

some of the bread trucks used ford chassis, these also used ford bellhousings, advance adapters makes an adapter to hook a 3500 or 3550 to a ford housing. the ford housing has a hydraulic slave cylinder for clutch which seems like it would be compatable with the dodge master cylinder. I have a 4bt out of a ford with a 3550 jeep 5spd overdrive coupled to a 208 transfercase, that Im in the process of putting into a 2000 Dakota using scoutII axles. I also plan on putting a 4bt automatic in a 98 Durango, using a 92 diesel pickup (2wd)tranny. I figure on converting the durango to 2wd as it will just be a grocery getter and a parts runner. good luck with your project.

The diesel swap sounds good. a couple of days ago
on E-bay there was a 4bt with a four speed GM tranny
attached to it. the guy wanted I think 3500.00 for
it. it was some where on the east coast.
these things come up on E-bay now and then.

I have a 91 dakota with the B3.9 4 cyl turbo diesel. If you are still interested in the swap let me know, and I will give you some info. It is not a direct bolt in by any means but it is fun and gets good mileage, 20+ in town close to 30 on hwy. I can send you some pic's too.

I only get around 22-23 in town but I think that is because I stil have the 3.55 gears and drive it quite hard. On the hwy I get around 30 even with a 3000lb trailer. I am swapping to 3.23 gears (hopefully) after my trip to the junkyard. I have broken my stock axle twice. That should help the mileage and has a stronger pinion which will hopefully stop the crunching of broken teeth.

I have been driving my Isuzu Diesel Dak for about a year now and am starting to get used to it. After having a 318 Dak for the last 14 years it has taken some time to get used to the slower pace. The 4L Isuzu which was from an NKR cab over was normally asperated but last month I installed a turbo and intercooler from an Isuzu NPR truck. Made quite a differance, still have to get the pump worked on to increase the fuel which should make a big differance.
I get about 500km per tank in my 99 4X4 CC Dak, what does a gas one get?
Still a long way to go to catch up to the 1100km I get per tank in my Grand Cherokee with the 2.8L turbo and intercooled Izusu!

Well maybe,.... since the Cummins is an industrial diesel and not a brand specific diesel is has a plate that bolts on to the back of the block that gives you your bellhousing bolt pattern. So it could have any number of patters depending on what you get it out of. Therefore is could be chevy, dodge, or a commercial size. A good Cummins shop and your engine S/N is all you need to see what is available.

I'm in the process of converting my 2001 Dak over to a 4bt. Got the engine, waiting on the adapter and bellhousing, I have to find a trasmission (NV4500, anyone got one I'm heading to IL at the end of the week from PA). I have motor mounts coming as well. Big project but in the end it will be worth it I'm sure. Then a transfer case, Dana 60 rear and a 44 up front. Lots of work ahead but its been fun so far. Tearing the engine down now and gonna have it balanced and I'm gonna rebuild it because I would really like to know everything about the engine first. That stuff is built HEAVY! Got my engine from Schwebels bread company.

Make sure its legal in your state before you do it! later. Dan
