I just bought a used 01QCD with a 4.7. Very dissapointed so far. I was wondering if anyone has some of these problems. When accelerating from a dead stop and letting off the throttle at 25-30 mph something in the driveline clunks, like the backlash is drawn at the same time. Dealer said its normal? Second, I've had a clunking in the front end. Took it in today and saw for myself that everything is tight including ball joints, however the front axle halves where they go into the housing have enough play in them that when you wiggle them you can see and hear the slop. What kind of tolerance is considered normal? Thirdly, if I can't figure it out, I might put a leaf sprung solid axle conversion on. Any ideas on what axle will fit the truck width and align with the transfer case?

Don't do a leaf sprung front axle. Do a 4-link with Coil-overs. It's much better.

As far as the sound you get fromt he front axle halves..that's normal. I get it as well. There is suppose to be alittle play in those.

As far as noise after you let off the throttle, you might have something going on there. Perhaps maybe a worn Slip Yoke or maybe U-Joint? But as far as play in it..I don't hear anything in my truck, but I can feel it. It does it as well around 25-30mph when I too let off the throttle. This I think is normal. What you are probably feeling is the differential releiving pressure on the ring/pinion.

But, then again, I don't really know what I'm talking about. *shrug* I'm just guessing from my own experiences.

the noise you hear when you let off the gas might be the transmission shifting to second or third. I know when I come to a stop I can hear and feel the tranny shifting to first.
