I'm looking for a locking differential for my 2000 2wd dakota. What is a good one to buy company wise, how long they last, and most importanly how well they work in snow and mud. Roughly what do they cost aswell? I've been doing research and can't find that much info.

I nope you are looking for a rear locker, because nobody makes one for the front. I do not know how much you know about lockers, but you should do some research. You probably want a manually actuated locker, if not a limited slip. If you get one that is always locked or locks up to easily you will end up tearing out your rear end. My local 4x4 shop likes the Auburn lockers, and I have heard good things about the detroit lockers. If you drive the truck alot, go for a limited slip type locker. If you are going to spend most of the time playing in the dirt, then go for a manual locker.

Dan

P.S. If you are not really good at it, have a professional install it.

You can get something from a Power trax to a detroit and a auburn in between.

Power trax are the cheapest and easiest to install but have their own issues. Noise and clunking seems to be the most of the issues and you will feel it.

A LSD Auburn will be next in price and you will not be fully locked.

The Detroit is by far the best and most expensive. It is fully locked at all time. No noisey but your tires will chirp in turning and from a stop if you hit the gas to hard. Off road performance cant be beat. You will need to rotate your tires more and check tire wear and use air pressure to help the tire wear. The out sides of the tread will wear faster and you will need to turn the tires on the rim once the out side is worn on one side. You will get the same tire life pretty much but you just gotta keep an eye on it. This is not a bad way to go but it will cost maybe up to 950 for the locker and the install since it is a carrier change in the diff.

the best mods are not cheap!

why is the detroit locked all the time? im not saying it isnt true, just doesnt make sense for anything but a trailer queen. what a waste of money, just weld your spider gears for free and save loads of cash in the process, it seems to be the same thing

Thanks for all the info, my truck already has anti spin differential how does this compare to a locking differential, as I found my wheels spun alot last winter but I had super fat tires on.

Welding you spiders gears is a hack mod in my opinion and has more cons than pros. But that is always an option.

The LSD slips because it is not a full locker. If one tire loses traction it sends all the power to the other. You can use you brake or E-brake to get it to not spin and help get traction back.

The Detroit I used was a full locker and yes it is a off road mod but works fine on the road just need to know how to use it.

There are pros and cons to most mods you just need to weigh out what you need more.

I thought a detroit would let the outer wheel "freewheel" during a turn?

Powertrax No-slip. I had it in my 2wd and no one knew it was there. It didn't click on turns, didn't jolt when hitting the gas, and turning was easy. This is an automatic locker and performs 100%. I swear by this locker. Since the no-slip performed so great in my dakota, i got a powertrax lockright in my jeep. It's clicks on turns and you get some backlash unlike the no-slip but traction is superior. Cost of the no-slip runs around $450 for the dakota.....and the lockright was $230 for my jeep. If you ask me, the no-slip is the way to go if you want a quiet locker that's "not there" :)

Hey forexfour,
Maybe you can help me out. I just got a Full Detroit locker installed on my rear axle a few weeks ago and I get alot of clicks and clunks. I was told this would happen ahead of time, I just didn't think that it would be this loud. It actually shakes my truck sometimes. I have a friend who put one on his Jeep and he said that it does the same thing. Do you have the same one? Maybe something is wrong with mine?

The Detroit I have is always locked. No clunks no clicking no jerking. I have the 8.25 rear and I got the only detroit they made for that rear.

Not sure of the type but it sounds like you got they type that will lock and unlock and that is why you get clunking and jerking. My was a full carrier change if that helps.

Any locker that is not fully locked at all times will clunk and jerk as it locks and unlocks.

Mine is the 9.25 axle, but I don't see that making a difference. They changed out the carrier too, it's a full no spin locker. I have another friend that has one on his Jeep Cherokee, he has an automatic transmission, I wonder if that makes a difference. His doesn't make any noise like mine or my friend's Jeep Wrangler, we both have 5 speeds.

I would say it is prolly the manual trans that is making it lock and disengage as you shift.

I had the automatic and it never made noise. Rarely would you hear it clunk or jerk to engage.

I had a detroit in my old blazer with a stickshift and it clanked and clunked when letting of the gas or turning.A friend of mine had the same truck with automatic and no such noises. Iv'e talked to a few other people and it's the standard trans that makes a difference. In an auto when you let off the gas the trans keeps pressure on the locker so it doesnt engage and disengage. In a stickshift there is no pressure left when you let off the gas so it engages back and forth unill it eqalizes. At high speeds it almost sounded like the gears were grinding but I never had any problems with it. Would definately buy another one especially now that iv'e got an automatic dak. Hope this helps you out.

I have a 1988 Toyota D/C 4x4 Hilux bakkie. I decided to buy two different powertrax lockers. I bought a No-slip locker for the rear diff, because it is "silent", when it lock, and unlock. I bought a Lockright locker for the front, because i recon, when i engage the front hubs, I am not going to worry about clicks, and cluncks. Big was my surprise, after i installed the rear locker, and found that it also made a noise when I turn, and pull away. At the moment, I am in correspondance with the supplier, to find out why. Except for this it works really well. I believe it is very important to adapt your driving style after installing something like this.
