The V6 is plenty strong enough to go off road, depending on what you do to it, and with it. If you take the basic stock truck and add some extra large (extra heavy) tires, you're going to have a problem. If you plan on cramming in 5 adults and a weeks worth of gear, there's going to be a problem.

You need to consider your rear end gearing first. If your off roading consists of mild snow on back woods roads, the stock gearing in 4L will work fine. If you're planning on tackling the Rubicon Trail with a full load, you'll need to reconsider that choice. It's all about torque application.

The V-6 is fine lifted and with 33's on and off road. If you have 3.55 gears though you will need to upgrade, if you have 3.92 you will be ok but may want to upgrade at some point.

I have ran my V-6 lifted for the last 50K miles no issues or problems. I would recommend you get a superchips programmer though it will give you some extra HP and Torque and change rev limiters and shifting on the Auto.

thanx for the info. the only thing i have planned to do to it performance wise is a k&n and maybe an exhaust. i really dont want to spend the money for a lift so i figured i would just throw on some 31"s. which tires do you recommend??? i wanna have some good offroad traction but since it will be my daily driver... i dont want them to be really loud goin down the highway.

The only advantage to the K&N is that it can be cleaned, instead of replaced. Nice for dusty conditions. CAI will increase power a little, but a drop in filter will not add more power, no matter who makes it.

And don't even start that whole efficiency argument again. 98%, 2%, 50%.... I'm so confused ;)

As for the exahust, the same thing applies. If you change the entire exhaust - from head to tailpipe - you might be able to pick up some power. Maybe. If you pick the right components. Cat back systems only change sound and look, not power. Some cat back systems actually cost you power, so be carefull there.

ok thanx for that, i mite not put an exhaust on...i never really wanted to do it anyway. it depends on how much of a budget im on wether i get the filter or not.

just from word of mouth and popularity, the BFG A/Ts are prob a good choice. check out tyres1.com, they have a bunch of tires and they tell you all the sizes and prices. they also give the exact dimensions, load capacities and side notes about the tires. Steve

I personally think the BFG is over rated and dumped them. They are only aggressive looking but that is what most are looking for in a tire.

I went to the Bridgestone Dualer AT new design. They seem to be a good tire so far but I have only had them for a few weeks. I ran the at Pismo and they worked fine. I dont normally run an AT off road but I will with these to try them. The BFG I did not like off road.

id go with the BFG ATs too. im runnin them on my 87. they are 31x10.5s and they handle the mud real nice. like you said, you dont want to do anything too extreme, just to play in the mud.

id go with the ATs, or spend a lil more and get the mud terrains. either way, youll be happy, cept with the MTs, they are a hell of a lot noisier than the ATs

this was what i saw over the weekend, an old 80s ram with a 318 and BFG mud terrains i believe that is always the best truck out with us could not make it up one sand hill. a 90s jeep wrangler with the 4.0 and BFG ATs made it up twice. he was the only one to make it up there that day. Steve
