Subject: Rancho 9000's DO NOT FIT!

As some of you might be aware, there has been discussion on this board before about the Rancho 9000 shocks and control arm clearance issues. (Front shock #99029)

Well, sadly it's very true. I will post some more detailed pictures and information later, but trust me they do not fit on a 2001 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 Sport (I have the tire and handling package - I don't think that changes the control arm geometry though).

It's not even close, they are way off. The Rancho shock body (the wide part) is 1/4 inch thicker than the stock ones (which is only part of the problem). The real problem is that the gas tube is about an inch LONGER than stock (and yes, the rod is SHORTER than stock and has less travel).

So.. The longer gas tube gets in the way of the control arm, whereas the stock one slides just underneath it at full travel.

I'll post pics later when I get them onto my website... Don't waste your time with these on the front... Rancho didn't do their homework on this one. And for those of you that have them and love them... Take the top nut off the shock mount and then lift the sprung wieght off the ground - see what happens to the upper mounting bolt. It get's pushed way back towards the engine (obviously very very BAD).

I'm returning my Rancho's for some Bilstein's.

For some reason I think I remember having to install them upside down. But I dont remeber for sure. I know the RS 9000's fit my truck stock.

Upside down? The top has a bolt mount and the bottom is an eye mount... I don't know of any way you could reverse it (or if it would even help any in my particular case)...

Here's a link to my site where I've posted a document about the whole thing... It shows exactly what my problem is in detail.
(if anyone cares :)

Nice pictures, really deomstarates the problem. From them, I can see a couple of options.

1: Get a differant brand. With the shorter travel of the RS900's, that's probably the best option.

2: Trim the A-arm flange, and weld in a backing support.

3. Move the upper mounting hole over 1/4".

I have RS5000's on mine, and they fit just fine. They seemed to the same size and travel as stock, if I remember correctly.
