I was reading an old post about full-time and part-time 4x4 and was wondering, I have a 97' part-time 4x4... does this mean I will not need a locker offroading? your help would really be appreciated because I am concidering a locker as my next upgrade. thanks
chris

Part-time 4x4 simply means that you have the lever or control in the cab...its 4x2 unless you put the selector in 4Hi or 4Low.

The opposite would be Full-Time 4x4 which isnt really 4x4 but allwheeldrive..where it gives power to whichever wheels arent slipping.

Lockers are totally different and as long as you have Part-time 4x4 you can put lockers in. I dont think you can get lockers for the 97up IFS Daks...but im not sure.

Part-time refers to the transfer case. As Leviticus said, it essentially means you're in 4WD part-time - only when you select it. Lockers would be for your differential and would "lock" your left side wheel to the right side (on the axle with the locker) so that you're applying the torque to the wheel with grip instead of the wheel that slips. A locker is among the best upgrades you can make off roading. So the short answer is, yes you still need a locker and I highly recommend one. There are lockers available for the rear axles and I'm not sure if it's ready yet, but I think ARB was working on one for the front (only use a selectable locker up front if you drive on the street).

Just as a note, there are several transfer cases out there that are full-time plus part-time. This is essentially an all-wheel drive case that lets you shift into part-time mode for true 4WD.
