Subject: Time to redo the looks of my truck!

Well Instead of getting the Rancho lift for my truck, I now have to redo the drivers side from the door back. I am going to have to replace the cab corner and bedside, because someone sideswiped my wife while sitting in the turn lane and never stopped. Of course nobody saw anything. So with only having liability and no uninsured moterist I get to pay for this out of my pocket. Thank god I do collision repair for a living. Anyhow would any of you guys be interested in a picture process of installing the Glassworks bedsides and fenders? That is what I am going to do in the next few weeks also a kinda custom paint job. I want it to not look like every other Dak on the road or off the road. If you folks are interested I will take pics as I go. Thanks all. BTW heres what the truck looked like before it was sideswiped. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/sprayedta/lst?.dir=/Dakota&.src=ph&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/

punkjeebs, the prerunner bar is a fabtech and I got it just up the road at Summit Racing. If I remember it was around $150.

RedKota,
I'm the guy you've been emailing with about the Glassworks stuff. Nice hood, by the way. What kind? Is the cowl functional?
Anyhow, anybody that is looking into undertaking the fiberglass project, it's a lot of fun. I did the front and rear over a four-day weekend (haven't gotten it painted yet, though). Anybody with questions or interested in pictures of some of the assembly/results, feel free to email me. If I don't have the pictures you want or you need more detail, I can take a few more and email them to you in a few days.
Best of luck to anybody undertaking this project. The fender coverage is awesome...I've taken-on some pretty deep puddles. Absolutely love the widebody!

Well project went underway Saturday morning. I took a few pics and will take a few more tomorrow. As for the Glassworks products, they are good quality and work well with the factory body lines. I really dont reccomend this for a person with to do on his own unless he has bodywork knowledge. Heres the rundown, Removed the bed from the truck, and drileed out all the factory spot welds. As for removing the bedsides if you plan on trying to save them its damn near impossible. Chrysler like to use a boding agent on the innerbed to adhear the bedside to the top of the ineer bedrail. After about an hour of wasting my time trying to heat the glue up with a rosebud tip I tossed that idea and grabbed the plasma cutter just below the the top of the bedside. Then used a 3 foot pry bar and torch (rosebud tip) to heat and roll away the tops of the bedside. Time involed in removing both bedside about 4 hours. Now after they were off I tigged all the holes from where I drilled out the factory spot welds about 2 hours to do that. Trimmed off the excess from the tailgate support and then started trial fitting. Glassworks uses ALOT of excess resin in the corners of the upper part of the bedsides. To get a good fit I had to use a die grinder and clean the excess gel up. They come made to be used WITHOUT the stock tail gate, but a little trimming and you can use you tailgate. I had to to alot of clean edgeing around the tailgate to get straight bodyline with the gate. So trial fitting and making correct body gaps ended up being around 3 hours. So as you can see I had approx 9 hours of time involved just to get it mocked up. Today I finished up the detail works mudded in the edges and finish sanded them. I had to also remove the factory inner bed wheel wells, the Glassworks bedside wheel openings are hella huge and they dwarfed the stock wheel wells. I also went to the salvage yard and picked up my extended cab side, thanks to the @#$holes that sideswiped me and took off! So aside from doing that and removing the cab side from the bracing that they cut off with it took me the better part of 7 hours. I will post up some picks tomorrow and you can check the progress. Thanks all.

So far you've done exactly as I did only I didn't bother with the heat gun or torch and already knew the bedside would be pretty much trash in the end. I drilled out all the welds and then used channel locks to peel up the inner edge. Then I just used a utility knife to cut through the adhesive and pried it off with a flat bar. I agree about the excess resin in the front corners. I cleaned mine up with a rotozip. I took a jack and a 2x4 and pushed the edges out about 1/4" where the tailgate attatches. This gave me enough room to get a tailgate on. I cut the inner fenderwells with a jigsaw. I also attatched the lower portion of the bedsides with aluminum supports. The only part I haven't figured out yet is how to extend the filler neck. The hose it too short so the cup that mounts to the bedside won't reach. I'm trying to find a way to use some rubber hose and clamps but having trouble finding something that large.

To anyone like me doing this in your spare time or in the garage... this is not a direct bolt on! It takes a lot of fitting and adjusting. There are no holes so all your tailgate hardware, tailights, fuel door must be drilled in exactly the right spot or you'll be fixing and re-drilling. The front is even more work. All the parts that used to attach to the inner fender had to be moved because there is no inner fender anymore.

It's 98% finished. I still have some detailing and the dreaded sand and buffing to do. I have to fab up some lower braces for the bedsides, wheel wells and lengthen the fuel filler hose. I will take some better pics with the big tires and eagle rims. FYI this project took me the better part of 100 hrs. from start to where it is now. So just remember the panels are not a simple bolt on. Here are some pics.
