Message:
Folks,
Ive had my 03 QC 4.7L with part time 4WD for a year now and am loving it. Im from Alabama where snow just dont come, but Im in New York now and its the Daks first real bad winter.
I handled the recent snow storm just fine, a little sliding but thats because my feet put a little too much power to the wheels in first.
I hauled out 2 big SUVs yesterday out of the snow, and used 4LOW. While doing so, I was spinning for a bit and went up to 3000-4000 RPMs. I know your not susposed to push it to hard or fast in 4LOW. What do yall think is a safe way to operate in the snow in 4LOW? I dont want to hurt my baby, shes been too good to me. Thanks

1st and formost: SLOW DOWN!!
Leave yourself plenty of room in front to get stopped. Snow is like slick mud, you slide forever -even offroad.

4-lo: Use it only when you need it (ie. pulling someone out, getting yourself out).

4-hi: When the surface you are on has a significant amount of slush or snow. Think of 4-hi as a vehicle with all-wheel-drive. That is basically what you have.

Getting thru a snow drift or deep snow is best done in 4-hi with just a bit of speed and throttle (not too much!)

Unless you are with someone or there is little snow on the ground (less than 4") you are taking a bit of a risk if you go it alone. Snow really hides the terrain (ponds, rocks, dry creek beds, drop offs, where the road really turns as apposed to where you "thought" it turned). It is always good to have someone standing by to pull you out of what you got into (or provide a warm place to dry off!)

These tips are from living on a farm in the mid-west and using 4 wheel drive for daily tasks.

I'm sure there are those that will agree and those that will disagree, but these general rules will lessen the likelyhood of your troubles while you become accustom to your new environment.

well just use 4-hi . last year i pulled out 18 people out and 4 hi is fine , you should really never need 4 low unless say your on the road pulling out a tree stump or serious mudder. 4 low is when you truck needs an extra set of balls. so when hi bogs down, hit low and tear it up =)
