clunking heard when shifting, unless I ride the clutch. The pedal is way to high. It's only got 475 miles on it.

What part of the shift does it clunk on?

Pushing clutch pedal in
Pulling out of gear
pushing into gear
releasing clutch pedal

Is there anything else that accomanies the clunk? An abnormal drop/jump in RPM? Change in acceleration?

It clinks/clunks When releasing the clutch into the next higher gear (sometimes). The clutch pedal is about 1 inch higher than the break pedal. I would like to adjust the release point closer to floor so i dont have to keep my knee bent into my chin.

I've heard a clunk of sorts too, but just attributed it to being normal. Happens when letting the cluth out. I haven't noticed any odd rpms or anything when it happens. Until something starts to act up or I hear differently, I'll attribute it to just being a transmission for a pickup.

The dodge, and jeep trannies are THE SAME.... so its not just a dodge thing.

Does it always happen on the one shift? Like 2-3? or 1-2?

The first part to wear out on manual trannies tend to be the syncos, so as of right now thats the only thing I can think of...

Also does it happen if you shift slowly? Like take your time putting it into gear, and take your time releasing the clutch.

Thats a really odd one.

If I concentrate on shifting e.g. Gas off, slide it out of gear, Engage clutch while shifting into next gear, Disengage clutch while applying gas (riding clutch) it's all good. But, if I want to get up to speed quick, drop it in second, clunk.

I took my buddies 88 nissan with 128k for a spin, same thing.

So, At 696mi, I'm due for a tranny job?

its possible your just dumping the clutch a bit... Otherwise you got something to fix that won't be cheap. On the up side your better off than my one budy, and the other with a weird happening.

One idea just hit me, the 'release bearing'...that coulda gone my friend's rx-7s bearing was toast and it make grinding at high engine/drive line speeds, and clunked under the best torque that little rotary could give.

The one has an rx-7 with the 5-speed, and he can't shift fast into third, it'll feel like its gotten into gear, but it just doesn't mesh. With him too if he takes it so, no problem. One time we went down the highway, he goes to make his shift at about 6.5grand, and when he releases the clutch pedal the RPM's JUMP to about 9.... They jumped, who knows why... THere wasn't any engine breaking orruring, and no acceleration so it wasn't in gear but the RPM's jumped ALOT.

The other friend's bronco spins for a second or two after you kill the ignition, and the wierd part is if you put it into first and dump the clutch after you kill the ignition and its doing its sputtering routien, it actually lurches BACKWARDS then stalls.... Again how would the engine do that?

Patindahat, I do seem to be dumping the clutch.
There doesnt seem to be enough play. The pedal is way to close to me. I looked for an adustment nut or something to move the the release point a bit closer to the floor. I plan on picking up a service manual soon to see about the release bearing.

I thougt the rise in RPM (only 2 or 3 times) was just my inability to to time the clutch and gas (i couldnt put my finger on what i did wrong) but now I'm not so sure.

Dodges are definetly known for driveline clunks. Manual trannies usually dont clunk, more of a grind, or rattle. i would make sure there is no play in the driveshaft, and then live with it. i have an 02 with 20K and an A/T and it has clunked since the day i bought it.

I have a 2000 with 20000miles and my trannie clunks just like everyone elses. I was worried at first, but EVERY other dakota and jeep Ive seen does the same. I wouldn't worry about it. I think its just not a smooth trannie. Its not a luxury sedan or SUV. Anyway. For adjusting the clutch. Isn't it hydraulic? I haven't actually looked, but it feels too smooth to be a cable. If it is, there should be some way to adjust it in the master cylinder, but all I know is you have to take it apart. I didn't want to play with it, so I left it alone. Let me know if you find out anything.

I had that noise too. Also, it wasn't a smooth engagement. I just put AmsOil in my manual transmission and rear differential and it made a noticible difference. The noise is gone and the shifting is much smoother.
