Subject: 2wd in sand

I've got a 2wd Dakota, and I was wondering if I ran a rear locker and some mud terrain tires, if I would be able to take my truck to the sand dunes. Can some one help me out with some info?
Thanks

o yeah baby, but you will need to air down those mud ts to about 10#s the ting to do is get a set of paddles some thing that wont hook up to fast this will allow you to keep your revs up. lock the rear and your ready to go. Note that there are different types of sand but when I broke my front end on my 98 dakota I still was able to run the dunes in coos bay OR with 4.56 gears a locker and 37inch boggers.

Locker is a great idea. the mud tires arent. Youre better off with all terrains in sand than muds. Youll need to air down to get a wide footprint on the sand. If youre gonna stick to sand I would get all terrains but if youre gonna do mud and stuff then get mudders

Thanks for the advise. Now that I think about it all terrains would make more sence in the front for floating across the sand. I was thinking mudders in the rear for more grip in the sand. But thanks again, AT's it is!

All terrains for all 4 tires!!!-mud tires tend to "dig" in the sand and that is exactly what you DON'T want!!

Just a reminder you numb nuts. His dakota is 2wd and if you guys really thought long and hard you will find that if you just put all terrains on a four wheel drive they work great. A truck that has only 2wd needs lots of power and needs to push sand to keep up the momentum. Have you guys ever rode a quad befor? 90% of all sand toys are 2wd and if you notice that 99% of the quads out there have paddles ,not the mud or standard tires that come stock on them. If you want to go in real sand like pismo or Oregon has, buy a set of paddles or you can buy boggers and modify them. IF you do buy a tire strickly for the dunes buy as wide and as small as you can. This will help you to keep the revs up.

How well do you think a set of 31" x 11.5" Mickey Thompson Baja Belted tires would do in the sand?

Mickeys are great sand tires but may not work well on a 2wd. On my dakota I used to run 33 12.50 bfg mud ts and they worked great but you need to air them down to about 8#. Slap a super charger on that bad boy and a set of paddles. Ha Ha.

mud tires will work in sand it's just hard to get them too.(I can't do it I'm way to heavy on the gas peddle) mickey thopsons will be a good choice. I like my exterrains they are a ton better in sand then my mud terrains were.

Sandman I think he is talking abotu going playing and stuff not spending 1/2 the day swapping the tires for paddles. Sure on a dedicated off road sand toy run paddles its most likely gonna get towed to the sand box anyway. I assume he has to drive the truck to and from. So I stand by what I say a all terrain tire is a lot better in the sand than a mud terrain up to a certain point. also a all terrain will outlast a mud terrain tire as far as tread life

personally i dont like MT tires. there are a ton other all terrain tires out there which I think are a lot better.

if you have only the rear wheels to move, you are going to need power. Which the dakotas have ,look I broke the front driveline on my 98 when I was in the middle of coos bay dunes (which most are very tall) and was afraid I wasn't going to make it out. I now have 2wd and 37'' boggers(which people say are not good in the sand). If I had all terrains I wouldn't make it far. All-terrains on four wheel drive work good because all four tires are working together. Yea I can move around in the sand but not up many hills unless I get going 60mph. Even if you have paddles you have to know how they work ,you can't just ease into the throttle or you will dig strait down. You ever wonder y quads have paddles and not all-terrains. I run boggers on my dakota for a reason they get me around better than all-terrains. All-terrains are meant for trucks with no balls and 4wd. For the record my bfg mtrs lasted 62,000 miles and then I sold them for a $100 to my friend that used them on his dakota.
