Subject: does backspacing hurt???
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wondering if a smaller backspacing that would make the wheel stick out more put stress on the front end like wheel spacers do? I'am getting a body lift soon and Iam adding 33's, but should I get a new set of wheels with less backspacing? I have the stock 16's and i love the way they look, but I also like the way it looks when the tire sticks out a bit. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. How much do you think a shop would charge to install a body lift? If I do it I will screw something up.

I have a 98 Durango. Most shops wanted any where from 500 to 900 just for the labor to put the body lift on. Every now and than you can find a shop like I have thta will do it for 100 per inch on a body lift. To try to help you with the question on the wheels. I'm running 35" on mine but I also have the stock wheels. If you change backspacing on the wheels I would test fit a couple of you stock tires to make sure that the stock size will work. this will also give you a chance to look to see if you have another couple of inches for the bigger tires. If you stick with the factory wheels you should be ok as far as 33"

A few months ago I was calling around to see how much it would cost to put a lift on my truck. There are several shops in Virgina Beach, VA area that quoted me a price of around $400 -- that's the lift plus labor. Not that bad of a deal considering the lift is around $200.

the backspace will move the wheel out causing it to pivot on an axis further outward. this results in the tire coming closer to the front and rear of the front fender well.

i run a 15X10 with 4.6"(weld) of back space. a 15x8 with 3.25"(AE 589) of back space will have roughly the same clearence(within .5"). stock is 5.5".

Thanks for the info. I think I might try to put the lift on myself witht the help of a friend. It can't be that hard. The local 4x4 shop here in pasadena, MD qouted me $250 for the kit, and $395 for the intall, I laughed. They aree called Mid-Atlantic 4x4 and Speed, they suck.

If your in MD you may want to try 4x4 Unlimited in Laurel. Wouldn't hurt to give them a call just to compare.
