Subject: 4-wheel ABS??

Message:
Is 4-wheel ABS a worthwhile option for $500 on a new Dakota CC 4x4? It seems a little steep just to add two more wheels to the ABS system! The truck comes with rear-wheel ABS standard! Do the insurance rates go down good enough to be worth it? Any help would be appreciative! Thanks!

Go with the 4-wheel anti lock, well worth it. I didn't and wish I had! Rear-wheel is hardly noticable IMO. I drive an s-10 at work (yuc) and it has 4-wheel anti lock, very nice! Especially on snow n ice. Just stomp-n-stay on the break and steer whare ya want go. Big difference between the two!!

IMO if you use your truck for off roading or mudding 4wheel ABS is not a good idea. When your brakes get wet or fill with gunk it will just start to slip more than usual cause ABS slips on its own then it will slip when it contacts the brakes cause they are wet or filled with gunk and you end up hardly having brakes. But if your not that type of guy that will use it offroad like that its a good system. Just my oppion.

Some people like it and others dont. The fact is that with out abs you will stop faster in the snow. Plus I like being able to lock up the tires. Plus the rear abs will prevent you from losing the rear so all you have to do is modulate. ABS makes for controled longer stopping distance. No abs makes for Short stopping distance and depending on you driving skill less or more controled. I had abs on all my trucks and on this one i dont and i love it. You are in control.

ABS??? Stomp on the brakes and you still have steering...any questions???? I can remember when I slammed my '69 Camaro into a 68 mustang when I was young/dumb and full of..well you know the rest. I tried to steer away, but w/o ABS or letting off the brakes.....I watched his right rear fender shatter my driver's window in my face...bummer. BUT>>> it's everyone's preference!! Thanks guys for all the good info!! Brian

all thh ABS is, is a anti-skid system that prevents the brakes from locking up and going into a skid and for controlled stops in all weather conditions at most any distance when the brakes are applied as in a panic stop.

I went with the full four wheel ABS on mine also. I don't do very much off roading but do need to be able to brake and steer at the same time with all our whacky drivers in the Northern VA Washington metro area. I have not had to put them to use yet, but am glad to know I have them! My insurance company did not lower my rates for this feature. Typical insurance company. They only know how to increase rates!!! Oh well, safe driving which ever you choose!

I have the 4-wheel abs on my 2001 quad. This is my first experience with this type of brakes.
During this past winter they really paid off as they did not lock up on ice and let me control the truck to avoid the curb and other cars; conventional braking system would have locked up and let the vehicle slide. I normally do not do any serious off roading, so can't share experience in that regard. This system acts quickly when lockup is detected. It responds faster than I could by myself with regular brakes.
