Subject: Bucket seats or Bench seat?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am going to be ordering a 2002 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 with a 4.7 and a 5 speed. I just want to get people's opinions on the optional bucket seats. Are they worth the $210 option or would a bench seat be good enough? Any comfort differences? Storage didn't seem to be much of a problem when I looked at a 2001 with a bench, because it still had a big console that folded down to put stuff in. Plus, a bench seat would be helpful to getting to know the ladies a little better, if you know what I mean! What do you guys think, bench or bucket? Thanks!

Bucket! I have the bench seat and at first I thought it would be great because I thought I could get an extra person in there, but you have to be a midgit to fit. I have since given up any dream of having the kids ride in the tuck (I got a regular cab and I put in an aftermarket center console in. Im considering ordering the bucket seats...

I have the bench seat in my 99 ext cab. and my buddy has the buckets in his 2001. I like the bench seat better. the console that comes with the buckets is small. no elbow room and doesnt fit much in it. The bench with the fold down center is nice and wide(lots of elbow room for both front passengers) and it has hideaway adjustable cupholders in the center near the bottom of the middle seat. Personally i think that the bench seats are just as or more comfortable than the buckets.

Thats my oppinion and i'm sticking to it
Plus nothing better than being able to make the girl sit in the center right next to you...especially if its a five speed 2nd and 4th are the only gears you need lol.

Bucket seats were about the ONLY option we chose not to order on our truck. We prefer the versatility of the bench with folding armrest. Plus, we actually like the looks of the bench seat better (wierd looking cup holders with the buckets) Look closely at the buckets - they are not significantly different from bench seats.

As for practicality, our 6 year old daughter routinely sits up front with us. Probably wouldn't work with an adult or large child.

My advice is sit in em both , and drive with em before you decide... I am 6'5" tall, and with the bench seats, my knees knocked the steering column even when i was all the way back with the seat, but the buckets with the six way adjustable controls allowed me to not only go back, but drop the seat down as well, and now my knees dont knock... I dont know how tall you are, but i recomend drvivng with em both to see which you like best...

DAK1 had 40/20/40 bench seat.
DAK2 has Bucket seats
Prefer the buckets as the wife has Kidney
transplant. The release for seatbelt on bench style sat on her transplant and required a small
pillow for comfort and protection however with the bucket the release side can be moved so that it is below the transplant location so less chance of damage to transplant.

Any time Joe. I have sat in both bucket and the bench, both powered and they feel about the same. The thing you trade off for is storage space/cup holder (in the 2001)/ power plug for the 6th seat.
I rather have the bucket but they are impossible to find in a quad cab right now. Heard from a few dealers that DC ran out of them at the end of the 2001 production run.

I have bucket seats on my 97 DAK. If anyone is interested, I'll trade them with the center console for a bench seat. My seats are in good condition and I've always had covers on them.

This obviously is a individual preferrence issue. But, when I think of Sport Truck, I think of buckets seats. When I think of hayseed bubba with his sister-wife sitting next to him in the center of the bench... with a gun-rack in the window, I think of bench seats.

This was in no way meant to offend anyone -- it is just the image I have between the two... just my humble opinion.

Question: do 6-way buckets sit lower than the bench? I own a '98 4x2 Sport, with bench seats. I'm also 6'4", and when I sit up straight and look straight ahead, I see roof. The roofline is slightly below my line of sight.
Another question is where do I get replacement seats? Can I get them from the dealer? All I see on the web are those race car seats.

Just so that you know. The bucket and bench seats are identical. The only difference is what is bolted in the middle.

Also depends on your back. Without lumbar support, the bench seat feels better to me. The buckets have no support at all in that area. Drive both seats for at least a half hour before making a decision.

The real question is "when is Dodge going to make the leather buckets with adjustable lumbar available to buyers of all models?"

I had a '97 CC till it got totaled, anyhow I had bucket seats with a center seat which I absolutly loved but I guess dodge doesn't offe that option anymore so I'm ordering my new truck, 2001 quad with the buckets. then gonna order the center seat from the Mopar Parts store (runs about $350 I think) put that in and have the best of both worlds.

One thing about buckets vs. bench. On the Dakota the seats are the same the difference is what is put between them. On the bench a center seating section with a fold down armrest/console is put there. On the bucket a center console iis put there. The only reason they feel different has to do with the console. The bench version with the armrest up gives us tiny (yeah, right) people a lttle hip room. That's why I have the bench in both of mine.

Just bought a new Dakota 2002 4 door with Bucket seats... The Dealer did not have any bucket seat Dakota in stock, so I tought the seats would be the same as in the 97 model. That is not the case. I just received it and my head is touching the ceiling!!! (I'm only 6ft!) Also, my neck rest is too low... Does it mean I have to change my seats? Any way to adjust the height?

RE:MATT

The center console mounts by bolting to the floor of the cab. The center seat that comes with the bench seat option bolts to brackets that attach to the driver and passenger seat frames. It is possible to remove your center console and install the center seat and brackets, but you would have to pull your buckets out and take the track assembly apart.
