Hi all,

Long time lurker here......

I have a 1999 4x4 extended cab with the V6 and 3.92 gears. I used the
search and found differing answers so I thought I'd post my own question.

I am about to buy (2-3days) a new set of summer only tires. I have a buddy
who has had 2 dakotas with 32X11.5 tires and they rubbed a little bit. I
could live with that. He has no lift and no trimming.

I would like to go to a taller tire (33X10.5) but I don't want to if it
wont fit. I will crank the T-bars (small rear block to level) if needed
but I want to stay away from body lift. This is my wifes truck and we take
it camping/fishing about 6 times per year (deactivated roads etc) 99%
pavement. No hard off road (CJ5 for the harder stuff)

I have heard some people have made it with the 33X10.5 with a little
rubbing or trimming. I would trim a little if needed. The truck still has
40,000 kms of warrenty on it. I know what I will end up with if I go with
the 32X11.5 but have no first hand experience with the 33X10.5.

I will be going with the BFG mt km, I have used a few sets of ko's and then
drove in a rig with the kms and the noise difference was not too bad at all
IMHO.

What would you guys go with.

Thanks for your advice
WW

If I were to choose, I'd go w/ the 32x11.50's. They look good and handle probably better than the 33's will if their only gonna be 10.5 wide. I'm not saying the 33's won't fit though, they may(although it'd be pretty darn close). I think your V-6 will turn the 32's better also. The 32's will let you put more power to the ground through gearing and footprint. Hope this helps.

With the T bars cranked about 1-1.5" you won't have to trim. It will rub a little on the frame in the front of the wheel when you turn with the 33X10.5's. If you go with a wider tire, ie. the 32X11.5 it will rub worse. I would get new rims with more backspacing with those. The 33's will reduce your rpm in high gear with O.D off by about 80 rpm over the 32's and about 130 rpm over the 31's. Also, remember that the wider the tire is, the more stress it puts on your suspension. I guess what I'm saying is that I would go with the 33X10.5's. Oh, and as far as raising the rear. Get a helper spring kit. They're cheap, raise you about an 1"-1.5" and help when you tow. I have them with the Tbars cranked - 1.5" lift.Be aware that it does stiffen the ride quite a bit. Something a 2" body lift wouldn't do. Remember, it is the wife's vehicle, she may not like additional bouncing.

Thanks for the information! One vote for 32" and one for 33". Let's get some more input to break the tie! What are your experiences?

Have to throw a little more into the mix here.

I just put BFG M/Ts on mine Saturday but I only went 265-75's. They fit fine and don't rub anytime. The M/Ts are louder then the stock goodyears but about the same as the T/As that I have run on my Suburban. I can't imagine being able to put 285's on the truck without rubbing issues though. The guy at the tire place told me the same thing. I sized 33's and I gotta tell ya I think they will rub.....and I have my T-bars up so the truck sits level.

What you have to remember is that when you crank the traction bars, it moves them down, but also in slightly. My 31X10.5's rub at full turn, but not enough to bind(just barely touch the frame).

i have 285/75/16 on my truck and there is no rubbing. i have a 3" body lift and cranked the T-bars so that may explain it.

there is a ton of info on this forum about this topic. if you
have 7" wide rims, then32's will fit with no problems.
with 8" wide rims, it will rub at full crank.

Yeah I agree, the wider the tire the more trouble you're going to run in to. If the truck is lifted you have a chance of getting them in there without rubbing on the stock rims. If it isn't you are going to have to decide how much rubbing you can deal with. I don't know if just cranking the torsion bars would get you enough or not for 285's. I did'nt think so that's why I stayed with 265's. But I did not try a trial fit which most of the tire dealers will do for you if you ask.

Thanks for all of the advice. I went with the 33X10.5 BFG MTs

Check this link to some pictures. I may have to add a small block or some of the over load springs I have read about on here.

Torsion bars were raised (according to tire installer who did it) about 3/4". Seems like more to me but I guess I'll search around here and find the stock height and then check against mine.

They fit with very, very slight rubbing (no binding at all, just a little rubbing noise on full lock) Not enough for me to worry about, I guess I could adjust the steering stops.

What do you think.

WW

PS-no trimming needed, but I have not gone off-road yet

Those look great. Fills up the wheel wells alot better than the 31's. I have KO's but I'm thinking of going to the MT's when I change. How are they noise wise? Also, if you want to raise the rear, use the helper springs. They raise you and give you better towing performance. You will probably have to readjust the tbars afterward to level it again.

Timberwolf,

I responded earlier but my message went into cyberspace....

Thanks for the good review. I feel the same way as you.

Noise wise they are good. They are not nearly as quiet as the AT but I can easily live with the noise. They are quiter than my super skinny winter tires (double studded Yoki 742's 7.00R15's)

Are you talking about air helper springs like firestone makes? I am really considering going for those. If not, what ones do you mean.

Timberwolf,

You said that you have helper springs? Where did you get them and how much were they?

stihl036,

Are your rims 16?

Thanks Guys.

My Truck is a 1999 so it has the 15" rims. I think the width is 8", don't know the backspacing. I've been told the bolt pattern is 6 on 4.5
