I don't know much about lift kits and was having trouble finding one for an 87 Dakota. I only want about a three or four inch lift. If anybody has any suggestions please reply.

With an '87 Dakota, your choices are very limited. No one markets a suspension lift for 87-90 Dakotas. However there are a few body lift kits available for under $200. Trailmaster does market a 4” suspension lift for 91-96 Dakotas that can be adapted to fit an earlier truck. I have installed it on my ’88 Sport. However, it is a major undertaking and will also require replacing the steering knuckles, lower control arms, brake calipers and more right down to the banjo bolts, with parts from a 91 Dakota. When completed, I had over $5000 invested in the project. Even a body lift has a few issues during installation. You can also crank the front torsion bars for an extra inch of so in the front. Check out http://www.walt-n-ingrid.com/modifications.html for details of the installation of the body and suspension lift kits on my Dakota as well as information on cranking the torsion bars. If you decide to take on such a project, plan on replacing everything.

I was able to get my 1989 4x4 Dakota lifted by four inches without a "suspension lift" (they dont make any for that model year anyways). If your 1987 Dakota is a 4x4, you can crank the front torsion bars by up to 2". This will raise it probably higher than the rear - NOT GOOD! You will need to have a 1" spacer placed on the rear axle to balance it out. Then, you can install a 2" body lift, allowing you up to 31x10.5" tires, which alone got me another 2" of lift. This totaled to be 4" on the suspension, and total of 6" increase in the cab height.

Remember to get an alignment done after all this! Total cost = $300 (minus the price of the new tires)

If you do not have 4x4, you can still do everything mentioned except the torsion bars and the 1" spacer in the rear axle.

Hey man, I basicly did what Ryan did. I have an '87 4X4 DAKOTA 3.9L V6. When I bought it, the guy had already cranked the torsion bars up front, and made it higher in the back. It pissed me off a lot. It looked stupid riding down the road looking like it wanted to take off and fly. But not to worry. I fixed that. I bought a 2" leaf spring block kit from Advance auto parts for $20. Then,I had to buy longer U-bolts. ($30 for the set of four). It is now riding on 31x10.50x15 BFG All-Terr. TA's. Looks pretty good.
To see mine, Look in the #6 photo album and take a gander. (Mine is the Two-Tone Gray Dak, Right side veiw) This is before I had the 2" blocks installed. But I have the tires on there. I have more pics to post soon, hopefully.

Its on the "Raised Dakotas" board under the question " Cant find lift kit anywhere, please help". Just take a moment to read through it. It will help.
Trust me.
