This may be a stupid question but I only just noticed that the new 1500 rams have a 9.25 axle listed on the web page. Is this the same as the 9.25 thats in the daks???? If so do you rectum that arb or ox may produce a locker for this diff due to greater market demand. Oh I hope so. Probably just dreaming though!!!!!!!!!!!

that 9.25 that you talk about it the gears ratio, what you need to find is the make of the axle that you want to put the locker in to. ie Danna 44 dana 60 or ford 9". the gears ratio doesn't matter they can find almost any ratio for any axle. hope this makes things a little clearer.

I'm a little unsure. I thought like 3.92 or 3.55 were gear ratios. I thought the 9.25 corporate or danna 44 etc was the type of diff?????????????

Yes, 3.92 and 3.55 are the gear ratios. 9.25 is in reference to you rear axle, a Corporate 9.

First of all, ignore tj's response. You and Zeke were both right, 9.25" is the type of axle. It actually refers to the size of the ring gear. 9.25 inches. The difference between the axle in the Ram and the one in the Dakota is width. The center sections are the same so any gears or lockers and such would swap directly from one to the other. Also, the front axle on the new Ram 1500 is the same as the front axle on the new Dakota. So to answer your question, yes the aftermarket should pick up on both ends of the truck and yes you can use that stuff in your Dakota.

Ahhhh...hold it guys.

The dakotas rear end is a 8.25" rear.

Unless you happened to get one of the lucky dakotas that got a 9.25(very VERY few!), or there are 9.25s on the 2003 that i'm unaware of, you have a 8.25" too.

Go look in your glove compartment and it will tell you the size of your axle, i just went and checked mine and on my 2002 4X4 I got the 8.25", just like i though, and the dodge home site has a 8.25" listed as the rear end dropped into dakotas. go check, if i'm wrong...then im wrong, and then you should be stocked cause that is one HUGE rear end!

im positive that arb makes an airlocker for the 8.25 cause they stick those axles in the rears of cherokees now. call up your local 4x4 shop and ask them about it.

As far as I know there are lockers for the 8.25 but none for the 9.25. The problem that people talk about on this board is that they have a 9.25 and that arb has not had enough interest to design and produce a locker for this type. Maybe I'm just barking up the wrong tree???

Yes ARB has a locker for the 8.25" Cherokee axles, but those are 27 spline. Not sure if they have one for the 29 spline.

Yes ARB does make an air locker for the 8.25 (Dak). I think it was "Offroad" magazine that did an install some time ago.

You can tell by the shape of the cover plus by counting the bolts. The 8.25 is round and the 9.25 is not round and has some straight edges.

Message:
When you see 9.25 on a Ram or Dakota rear differential it is refering to the Chrylser corperate 9.25 inch Ring gear same with 8.25 it refers to the Ring Gear size who has ever heard of 9.25 gears maybe in a tractor come on guys Rams have the Dana 44 in front with a 30 spline axle. The Dana 44 has many posi and locker options the Chrysler 9.25 differential has been over looked and has only 3 choices of positraction Auburn Limited Slip,Dana trac lok,Detroit Locker

cody, i hate to break it to you but the new ram1500 has an 8" corporate front end. it's identicle to the dakota and jeep liberty. i'm not positive on whether or not the rear end is the same(definately wider) but i know for a fact that the front is.

if you have any doubt please feel free to reference the group buy i put together in the group buys forum.

Hey Ian my statement was explaining what the numbers ment regarding ring sizes and how to deterimine what differential you may have in your truck some of the responbeders were confusing ring gear size for gear ratio and I think you ment the 8.25 corperate front end for 2002-2003 Ram front ends being that chrysler only has two sizes the 8.25 or the 9.25 chrysler usually uses Dana up front are you sure that they put the 8.25 up front and it is not a dana 44

cody, i know what you're explaining about the size of the ring gear but you are incorrect on the Diff sizes for models years. the front end isn't 8.25" it is 8" even. identicle on the dakota, liberty, and Ram 1500. from '00 to today, there is no Dana about it, they are all chrysler corporate(dakota and liberty)02 to today, the Ram 1500 is all corporate as well.

by the way, almost all 4X4 dakotas with a V-8 come with a 9.25" rear end. only a few 4.7L came with the 8.25" and just about all V-6 models.

if you have a late '99-'03, you have an 8" chrysler corp front end and either an 8.25"(10 bolt) or a 9.25"(12 bolt) rear end.

no if,ands,or buts.

Alright IAN I wont argue with you but I personally own a 2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 and unless the name DANA stamped right on the FRONT differential cover was a FACTORY mistake and the 4.56 ring and pinion I had 4wheel install for me that were DANA model 44 gears was also a mistake then i would say you were correct but I know for a fact that 94 thru 2001 model RAM pickups either had the Model 44 or 60 DANA front fifferential in them and if you read my comments correctly the 8.25 I was speaking about was the rear end not the front
and if you get a repair manual from the factory wich i have it will confirm the same thing I know this is a Dakota forum but Ram and Dakotas
use many of the same parts

Ok you two, here are the facts that i have researched up on this so we can stop going at it.

When the Ram changed over body styles in recent years and decided to go with the Independent Front Suspension (IFS) they went ahead and installed the same axle as we have in our 2000-up dakotas...the corporate 8". That's the reason we have gears now going up to 4.56 for our dakotas, cause of the same axles.

The pre-IFS axles in the 1/2 ton Rams was a Dana 44 solid front axle. The 3/4 and full tons had either Dana 44s or 60s depending on engine and option choices.

2000-up dakotas with the V8 had the option of a 9.25 rear axle. An upgrade for the 4.7, and I'm not sure, but i also think it was an upgrade for the larger V8 as well and not a standard feature, but that's only because my neighbor with the big engine has a 8.25 rear (10 bolts). Then again, i could be wrong on that.

All other dakotas come with the 8.25 rear axle.

I also found out that some IFS 97 and up Dakotas have DANA 35 IFS differential in them found it in 4wheel parts catalog with gear ratios as low as 5.13 for the Twin I-Beam Axle with reverse Rotation and gear ratios as low as 4.56 with CV. style axle STD. Rotation
