I was hoping for some help. I only want to spend about $500 making a Dakota 4x4 even more off-road worthy. My guess is that BFG A/T tires with some beefier shocks may be all I can do... Will it really look like an off-road truck? Thanks for the help.

Dan

It will definitely help matters. It will not only LOOK like an offroad truck, but the BFG tires and upgraded shocks will sure make perform better as an offroad truck!

Yes - if you intend to take your Dakota and turn it into a nice street/offroad rig, always start with suspension mods. This includes shocks, urethane bushings, bigger tires, bigger wheels, lift, etc.

You can always check out mine:
It's a 1989.

Dan, Click on the profile link for myself and Blizzard for what youll look like with BFG's. We both have them. You will increase your off road capabilities quite a bit with just them. Shocks are a good idea too, but if you could swing it, I would opt for a limited slip rear diff before the shocks. That is unless your truck is already in need of new shocks. Either way you will make your truck more "off-road-able".

Another option would be a locker in the back. They make a world of difference

Just out of curiosity, how do the BF Gooodrich AT's perform in mud and snow? They look awesome on the Dakotas and have been considering buying a set.

I own a set of the BF Goodrich A/T 31x10.5" ones and they are very nice. They have deep grooves that have been cut into the tread, which means you will have that traction all the way until they are bare. Also, they have 3-ply radial walls, the only ones in the industry. I think its patented. They are really nice tires and I doubt I will ever go with anything else. These tires will take you anywhere you want to go. I live in Utah, and we have all weather elements here.

I would recommend buying a complete set of 5 tires, and include the spare into your tire rotation. This extends the life of your tires by 20%.

Does ARB Lockers have a setup for the 2000 Dakotas?

No, ARB does not have an air locker for the dakota axles. Apparently there hasn't been enough interest in the lockers for them to speed up the development of one for our trucks. I think I may look at either a limited slip rear or a locker for my 2001.

Hey blizzard, I checked out your site. Nice looking truck. Looks like your BFG's are getting a little worn down. Might be high time to check into some more. Ever looked into a rollbar in the bed, and some lights up there? Also, if you shopped around, you might find some cool offroad bumpers for it which would be cool. I think a 4" lift would kick axx.

LOL Ryan ... they better not be getting worn down. They've got about 1000 miles on 'em. The little nubbies aren't hardly wore yet.

As far as a rollbar goes, the quad cab body is long enuff. Rollbar would just make it look longer. 'Sides, it wouldn't go with the rolltop cover.

But ... thanks for the compliment (I think).. hehehe
