Hey, have you seen the new switches v.s. the old floor lever to switch into 4x4. Aren't the old levers better? I just don't think those new switches are as rugged or reliable

I think it is more of a manly preference but keep in mind that other manufacturers have been using this system for 6 or 7 years. Also, the transfer cases in the ford and gm were built by New Process Gear which is the same units in the dodges because DC owns them......It is a non issue because I think you can still switch the t-case to nuetral for towing. FYI, mine has the lever in 2k.....Makes me more manly!!!!

There is actually a recall on the new electronic dash mounted 4x4 switches which may not fully engage into gear when the operator moves the switch. This could cause the vehicle to go into neutral unexpectedly and roll away if the e-brake is not applied.

I'll take the manual lever any day!

Wow, does anyone know why Dodge decided to change this now, their system was working just fine and everyone seemed to like it. Does anyone know if a floor lever is going to be availible or if the dash mounted switch is the only option? This is a big diapointment to me!!!

dash mounted switch is only option. They are trying to free up some space in the cab and add drink holders I guess and make the truck more car like for the wusses of the world buying SUV's that are just lifted cars with bigger bodies. I think you can still get the lever in the full size but I don't know as the 2002's are coming out.

I have the new electric switch on my 2001 Dakota and haven't had any problems yet. I had the recall done and it seems to lock up quicker than it did before. It is more convenient having it on the dash, but I have a number of friends who have older Chevy's with the electric shift system and when they malfunction, you are stuck with 2-wheel-drive. Not sure why why, but it seems like the '97 Dakota I had with the manual shift actually seemed to have a little better traction off-road, too.

Thats cool, I guess we have to just hope they dont malfunction : ) I'm looking into the new Dakota and I have a 00' with a V6 it's 4x4 and I'm in love with it, it's just I'd like the added power of the V8 and I think it would be better to just get a new one in about a year or two. Mine has the lever on the floor and it's the best, I guess thats why I'm a little reluctant to trust the new tech, I like the tried and true.

I've got the electronic shift on the fly in my 2001 and it's worked great for me so far. I go wheelin on a weekly basis and the shift hasn't given me any problems even though I'm still yet to take it in for the recall on the switch. Either way you go, you'll be happy, the V8 kicks ass

I work for GM as a Tech. Advisor and can tell you that the encoder motor and the front axle actuator are the most common failure items in the drive train of the 4x4 trucks. They definatly are a weak link. The engineir have definatly forgoten about the K.I.S.S. princepal. Technology is great if it solves an exsisting problem but technology for technologys sake is never a good thing. I wish one of the car companys would make a vechile with simpilicity and function in mind. I would love it if a company would make a 4x4 much like the old willy's jeeps. Very simple, easy to fix and modifify and very dependable.

Yah, why dont they simplify it more. You know I have some friends and they like the styling of the older 2000 vs the 2001 and the lever is defenetly the way to go they say, they are more into off roading than I am.

I was told by a salesman that the system in the
'01 was taken right off of the Jeep Cherokee. I
don't know much about the Cherokee so I was
wondering if anyone could confirm or deny. As for
the floor shifter I love mine. Only problem is I
had an unplanned off-road adventure the other day
( read I hydroplaned ) and I spun into a tree at
about 40 MPH. The floor shifter put one hella
bruise on my calf. Only complaint I've ever had
about it. It gonna take them a month to fix my
baby though *sigh*.
