Subject: Buy 4 x 4 or raise it?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all,

I'm buying my new 01 Dak Quad V8 next week and now I'm not sure if I should get the 4 x 4 or raise it after I buy it. I don't really need another 4 x 4 (already have one), but I want the look of a 4 x 4. Two Questions: Would it be cheaper to raise it and get bigger tires/rims or buy the 4 x 4? Which would give the smoother ride?

Thanks so much,

Yvonne

I would say get the 4x4. There aren't any suspension lifts out yet for 2x4 Quads yet to my knowledge. AS for body lifts I'm sure someone will have one out shortly but, In the long run you will have more resale value in the 4x4. With that said, A lifted 2x4 Quad cab with a pre-runner look would be very cool to me!

If you're after the pre-runner look for a quad cab, check out http://www.geocities.com/quad2nv/

He's got a Fabtech lift on his 2 wheeler 2001 quad cab.

Hey Guys,

Thanks much for your input. I'm new to this...what's the difference between a body lift and a suspension lift? How does each look and how does it effect the ride? What kind of $ are
we talking here? Also do either of you know if the ride would be better on a 4 x 4 or a lifted dak? And thanks blizzard for the excellent link...great resource...and the quad I'm getting is Patriot Blue too!

A body lift is just that. Spacers between the body and the frame. Doesn't do a thing for ground clearance.
A suspension lift actually replaces the stock suspension. Bigger springs, more ground clearance.
I've never ridden in a body lift truck, but I'd suspect that it wouldn't affect the ride much. Just have a higher center of gravity.
My F150 had a 6" suspension lift and 35" tires. It rode like a lumber wagon ... but looked cool as hell and the extra clearance really helps when/if you need it.
My personal preference is 4x4. But it all depends on what you plan do to with the truck. An occasional trip down a fire trail (when it's dry) might do a 4x2 justice. But if you get in the heavy $h!t, a 4x4 will take you the distance!

Blizz, Thanks for the update. I knew that fabtech was working on one but didnt know they had finished it. That was a sweet looking truck on the link you gave. Yvonne, A suspension lift will be more expensive than a body lift, but it is absolutely the way to go. If it is only a 2 to 3 inch suspension lift then the ride quality should be the same if not a little better than stock. More than that and like Blizzard said, it seems to get a little rougher. If you put that fabtech lift on a 2x4 I think it would be a very sweet looking truck. There again, as my compatriot said, with a limited slip rear, you can go quite a few places, but not quite as many as if you had 4 wheel drive. Just depends on what all you want to do. I have to have a 4x4 personally.

Hey Again Guys,

Well, I don't really need a 4 x 4...like I said, I already have one to take care of the rough stuff...I was just wondering if this might be a cheaper/easier route to take to get the look I want. I don't think I'll be using this truck for anything more than fire roads. The other thing is that I don't want to have to step up too high into the cab (even with tube steps etc) because of my bad knees (skateboarding injury from my youth!). Do you think a 2" suspension lift will be enough to achieve the pre-runner look? How big of tires could I get on it? Any idea how much $ we're talking for something like this?

Regards,

Yvonne

If the fabtech lift is a 2 or 3 inch lift then you should be able to fit 32x11.50's. That would look very good as well.

What is the pre-runner? Is it basically a 4x2 at 4x4 ride height? Thanks for the help.

Its basically a lifted 2x4 with bigger tires and good suspension. They are used profesionally as chase trucks for off-road races like Baja and to also pre run the race course. Hence the name.

Don't trade your 4x4. Save that money it would cost to trade and put it into a serious lift kit, tires, locker, and the right gears. New trucks are twice as hard to find mods for and they cost three times as much.

Gas Mileage?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi everyone
I just recently purchased my first 2001 4x4 Dodge Ram 1500. I really want to get a 6" suspension lift so I can get much taller and wider tires. Since the gas mileage I am getting now is awful I am just wondering if anyone knows how much worse it will get if I get it lifted and change the tires? Thanks for your help...

Gina, it will all depend on what you do to it. If you do jus the lift kit and taller tires your gas mileage will drop drastically and performance will be greatly reduced because the motor is having to work harder to get the tires to move and keep them moving. Youll neeed to regear the differentials in order to get back the power and assuming you choose the correct ratio will get you somewhere back to orginal mileage. Jus my 2 cents

Gina, install a cold air intake and a free flowing exhaust and you'll help out your gas milage. There are a lot of air intakes to choose from like K&N and "360 Intakez". Also you can get a good flowing exhaust that doesn't have to be loud if you don't want it loud. Nowadays loud doesn't always = power.
