I've noticed all of the hype recently about the Rancho 3" lift that is about to be released for the 2000-up rack & pinion Dakota. What gives? Truckin Suspension (truckinsuspension.com) has several different lifts for the 2000-up rack & pinion 4X4 Dakota. They have a 4.5", 6.5", and a 9.5". The only benefit I could see from the Rancho lift is that they use a newly cast drop down knuckle instead of drop down brackets for the upper control arms.

If you visited this site often you would know one of our members put up his truck for the first lift from Truckin and it all went down hill from there. Truckin lost anyone from this site who was interested in a lift. There are a small few (2 or 3) that have recently posted praise about the Truckin Susupension lift.

Yes there is a truckin lift and yes some are backing it but not many. They prolly fixed there problems but they do not deserve 1 sale.

I think Rancho will get all of this boards Suspension lift waiters, including me.

FXF

Do a search for Truckin suspension you will have Days worth of reading. You may understand then. It is a old dead issue, Know one here wants it, as far as I can tell.

I've only recently come across this site and am still learning my way around. I hadn't seen all the problems that Knobby had with his lift. I felt bad for him when I read about it. However, I would be interested in knowing if anyone has had any success recently with this company simply because there aren't very many choices out there. 3" from Rancho just isn't enough for some of us. Personally, I would like to see Tuff Country release their 5.5" for the 2000-up Dakota's, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

The whiplash lifts are only for looks and not to be used off-road. Whiplashed is based out here in California and i have run accross a few chevies running the lift who have said that when they bought it the whiplash guys recommended no offroading that they wouldn't have attempted with their stock set-up trucks.

Basically the lift is for looks only, it's freaking huge, plus whiplash has had the government after then for some sort of financial problems. In my book, not the company to trust.

I'd go with truckin before i went with whiplash, and trust me, that's sayin a lot.

Wait out for the rancho 3" + the PA 3" body lift so you can get 6" of lift. Probably the safest bet if you need 6" of lift. If you must have 35" or you just can't bring yourself to get a body lift, then maybe look into truckin, if you must have a lift of that magnitude.

But i wouldn't suggest a 9.5" lift from truckin. The 6.5" is really close to the 6" from the rancho + PA, and then all you probably need for 35s" is a front bumper from the likes of hanson, like the one forexfour has on his site that you can view by clicking on his picture and going to his homepage.

3" rancho and 3" body will clear 35's which is as big as the IFS will take. If you want to go bigger than 35's then either stay on paved roads or pay for a solid axle swap.

Frank, I put the PA 3" body lift on my truck and had only slight rubbing in the front bumper with 33X12.50-15's on the stock rims. I turned each torsion bolt 3 full turns and that alleviated the problem.

i have a large problem with the pa lift, you see i have a waren winch w/ the transformer mount. so inorder to rase the body i'ed have to rase the mount for the winch also (in order for it to look good when finished). this is because the winch mount wraps up and around the bumper. so any how i'ed have to pay some one to make costom frame extations. one guy gave me a quote at aprox. $700.00. OUCH. so any way 700+200(pa lift)=900.00. i just as well spend a little more and just get the sup. lift. (that was this guys opion, that gave me the quote). so hear i am, wateing till the rancho lift comes out at the end of the month.

Hey Pete, or anyone,
What's the difference between a drop down knuckle and a drop down bracket?

Also, I've heard that the Rancho lift is in actuality, a bit larger than 3". Something more like 4" but they state 3" for one reason or another. Insurance comes to mind, but I'm not sure.

The knuckle on your truck is what your front wheel/axleshaft bearing is bolted to. The knuckle is attached to the upper and lower control arms via ball joints, and stearing linkage is attached to it so you can turn. A drop down knuckle is the exact same thing only it is longer above the centerline of the wheel. It attaches to the upper control arm in the factory position, thereby moving the centerline of the wheel down, and creating lift. A drop down bracket is what would be used if stock knuckles are to be kept. Your upper control arms will get bolted to it instead of retaining their factory position. The drop down bracket usually bolts/welds into place and sometimes can involve cutting off the old brackets. Hope that helps!

Thanks Pete! Great info!
I know this will sound dumber after I read your detailed explanation, but why do you think the drop down knuckle is more advantageous than the drop down brackets? Is it because it keeps it a bit more stock?

Thanks bud,

Basically, yes. You don't have to mess with the upper control arm location at all with the drop down knuckle.

Pete very good explination.

The reason I had to sell my truck is because of the stress the front drive shaft was going threw. There was no way to keep the U-joints on the front from going out every about 6,000 miles. Also there was alot of extra stress on the trany which was causing it to leak.

Honistly with our weak torsion bars I wouldn't recomend even going with 35" tires. My bars were about to need replacing after about 9,000 miles.
By leaving the Diff in the same position you don't have that extra stress on your Drive train or suspension.

Also Ranchos metal is alot stronger then the steel that Truckin Uses.

Guys I get e-mails from people daily with problems with lifts from Truckin', Whiplash, and Rancho. I must say the 3 people from Truckin are screwed. The guys I've talked to that have the whiplash kits open the box and then try and sell the kits. The kits are crappy but they are better then Truckins kits. The people with Rancho kits usually have questions I can't answer.. Like "Where's the part thats shaped like a horseshoe go?" I have never gotten any complains or people bitching about Rancho lifts other then the fact that's it's bright red in color and what paint to use to cover that up.

The few people that have not had problems with Truckin-Suspension have been -2000 there have not been any reports from people with 2001+ that have not had any problems. There were 3 of us that I know of that installed the lift. The red truck w/ the 6.5" lift (Sold as soon as the lift was installed), 4.5" lift that was installed in there shop and we haven't heard anything from that guy since and he won't return my phone calls, and my 4.5" lift.

I just had CMS install the Rancho 3" lift on my 01. They modify it to work on the 01. They did a great job but it's pricey. I also have a 3" body lift. I'm putting 35's on next week. Every shop I talked to would NOT install the Truckin kit. They all said they had bad experiences with them.

Hey Rick, if you have any pics of ur truck with the Rancho lift installed could u email them to me? Bobolama2@yahoo.com I would appreciate it as I intend to get the Rancho lift when it comes out the end of this month and would like an idea of the height I will end up with since I will have the same setup as you(3" body + 3" sus). Also, did they install the Rancho lift for 97-99's and modify it to work with the rack-n-pinion? or did they get their hands on the lift that's not out yet? I see where you noted the lift was modified to work so this may be a redundant question lol. I am just really excited that my truck will be suspension lifted by next month:)

Yes it is possible. Depending on what stock wheels you have.

Ricky I also posted your pictures on my website http://www.knobbyman.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album51&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

If you have any more pictures or can get some of underneith and the way the rack & pinion is linked.. that would be awesome.
