Subject: 265/75/16's on 01 4x4?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know if these size tires would fit on the 2001 4x4 Dakotas?? The stock tires are 265/70/16 with the Tire and Handling group. I think they're a 1 inch difference. Thanks

The 265x75's are the same idth as your stock tires just a little taller. Your should be able to go up to a 275x70 with no problem. They are bigger than a 31x10.50 but just a tad under a 32x11.50. Blizzard has them on his. Click on his profile for a good picture.

I have them on my 2001 Dakota and had to lift the front torsion bars about 3/4 of an inch to stop minor rubbing. This was after I had a winch installed. Before the winch install, they did not rub at all.

Ralph, how does your truck ride now that you cranked the torsion bars? Is it pretty significant? And how does the truck look with the bigger tires compared to stock? I'm thinking about getting mudders in the larger size, should look pretty good

I raised my torsion bars about a half inch after I put my grill guard on. I think mine was a little low from the factory. One side was a half inch lower than the other too. Ride is fine. You can go about a half to 3/4 of an inch without any big change in ride. May seem a little firmer but not a lot. Anything over that, an inch or more, is going to start to become noticeable. Also your front end will be higher than the back and look funny.

The ride was not affected at all after cranking the torsion bars. I only had to do this after I had the winch and winch mount installed. If you don't have a winch or other heavy setup on the front of your truck, you should be fine and not need to crank the bars.

Well stock the front is a little lower than the rear so I think cranking the torsion bars a 1/2 inch would even out the truck and it'd look better. Plus, the front is a little mushy so I wouldn't mind a little tighter suspension up front. How much would it cost to have the bars cranked? Thanks

You are correct. A half inch about levels it out. Thats where mine is and also the fron end doesnt feel as mushy. Just had it down a road to day the was only half paved. Other half was tore up from construction. Ran about 35 to 40 all the way down it and the ride was unbelievable. No bouncing and flopping. Very good steering control. I was truly amazed, expected it to be a bit rougher than it was. About a half inch raise on the bars is just about perfect. Save yourself the money and get a 24mm socket, a stout socket wrench and a short piece of pipe to slip over the socket handle and do it youself. Turn the adjustment bolts clockwise to raise. take measurements from the ground to the bottom of the fender well on both sides. Turn the bolts a little at a time and keep taking measurements in between. Also bounce the front end up and down before taking measurments so that the bars can flex and adjust.

Good news, thanks Hawk. I think I will do the crank but wouldn't the 265/75's be bigger than the 275/70's? I think the 265's are a 31.6" tall and 10.4" wide and the 275's 31.2" tall, 10.8" wide. Also, what's up with that gap in the fender wall? I can see parts of the engine; I don't want mud and snow going in there, is there any kind of protection I can get for that besides duct-taping it when I go wheelin?

Collin,
According to the handy BFG 2001 catalog the 265x75's are 31.8x10.5 and the 275x70's are 31.3 by 11. yes the 265's are just a tad taller but the 275's are a bit wider. Just depends on which way you want to go.

Chris,

275x70x16 are about a half inch taller and a half inch wider than your stock tires, and they will fit w/o rubbing according to guys on this site who have them.

There is a guy on eBay that sells a kit to close the gaps in the fenderwells. They run about $40 usually. They are made from thin rubber, and include factory-type fasteners to install them.

I bought a set from him for my Dakota and was pleased with it. They installed quickly/easily and do the job well.

Jason (and anyone else),
I was just at a shop looking at the A/T Revo's based upon the opinion survey on tirerack.com where they are the highest rated A/T tires (less miles than some others though). Anyway, I was about to post for feedback on this tire until I read your post. Couple of questions:
Do you have a 4x4 or 4x2? I'm looking at both sizes that you mentioned and have the 01 Quad Cab 4x2 with 255/65/16 and would like to move up. I was leaning towards the 265/75/16 because they are LT rated and I will be doing some towing. (Nothing too heavy) The 275/70/16 tires are P rated... is there much of a difference between passenger and light truck?

According to a web tire conversion chart
265/75/16 = 31.6 x 10.4 x 7.8
275/70/16 = 31.2 x 10.8 x 7.6

Would I have to do any trimming with either of these tires? Anyone, anyone... Bueller, Bueller?

Thanks in advance.
