Subject: 4X4 is messed up

i have a 93 dakota 4x4 with the 5.2L. yesterday when i tried to put it into 4-wheel drive to back out of a steep ditch i was in, it made this terrible clunking noise constantly. every time i step on the gas or am trying to turn a little, this only happens in 4 wheel drive, normal 2 wheel driving hasn't been affected at all. It sounds like something is bent or broken under there, the sound isn't the tire catching or anything, it's definitely a metal on metal clunk. Any ideas of what it could be, or should i just take it in and have it looked at, cuz i'm not gonna go through this winter without 4x4, especially here in SD.

It does sound like T-case. Try removing front drive shaft and then see what it does when in 4wd. This may help narrow it down to t-case or front axle. the front axle turns all the time, even in 2wd, but may not make the noise until engine torque is applied in 2wd?

My Dak did the same thing this past weekend. I should have it back tomarrow after a $740.00 rebuild. My transfer case was dry and I never seen a leak. I'll check my t-case oil at every oil change now.
Don't keep driving it with it making noise. The chain can wear thru the case costing you a lot more money. I hope you find a cheaper rebuild than I did. Good Luck.
