Subject: The Perfect Tow Hooks

Message:
Hawkeye gets the credit for the first person I know of to mount tow hooks on a Dakota with a 3” body lift. I was un-happy with this set-up and wanted something that would not let the tow strap fall off when the tow strap became limp. I work next door to Central Coast 4 Wheel Drive and looked at every truck that came into their parking lot. I found out the new light duty Chevrolet and GMC Trucks, Suburban and Tahoes have tow hooks that will fit in between the frame rails. Frame rails are 4” across on LD trucks and Dakotas, Chevrolet HD trucks are 3” across.

I just bought two 4.5” x ½” Grade 5 Bolts and mounted them were the bumper mounts to the frame. Two holes were drilled to allow the bolt to go through the frame and one on the bottom to keep it from rotating. I also think this will work with the cut outs in the 2001+ Dakotas with out a body lift. It looks to be about the same spot that the holes will be.

I looked at GM because Dodge has all their tow hooks up their BUTT, and like them there. I figered if it is stong enough for a 25 foot POS 2 ton Suburban than it is plent strong for us! Maybe because 3/4 of all trucks on the road are GM or Fords? I looked at my budies Ford and their hooks SUCK. Ugly and a complete loop so a D-ring will be needed for a tow strap. LAME, hell I work on Honda and Toyotas all day long and still drive a Dodge!

Oh ya, they are only $20 each!

I looked at your pics....do you have the bolt that stops them from rotating installed in the pics? It looks like they would rotate up and down mounted like they are in your pics.

I moved the tow hooks 2 days after I took these pictures. I did not have the camera that day at work, just had time to modify my design a little. They are up and back now and use the front bumper bolt hole and have a bolt with a nut as a spacer on the bottom, to stop rotation. I realize that anything adapted to fit will not be the stongest, but it works better than what I had. I tried the front receiver and hated it, its for sale... I pulled 2 trucks out of the mud this weekend and no problems. The best part is that they look stock.

My GM dealer had these bad boys in stock!

Yes he did test them out last weekend. We all purposely burrier ourselves in the thick mud to test these out. They work great!

At one point I think three of us were stuck at one time waiting our turn for the front tow hook pull.

Excellent!!!

Wouldn't happen to have the GM part# handy by any chance would ya? I can then call ahead and make sure they have it in stock so I don't have to stand at the GM parts counter for too long and catch something:)

i have a 98 dakota 4X4, and wanted to put on some
tow hooks. after lots of searching i decided to make my
own. i used a 1" piece of key stock, drilled and tapped
a hole on one end to thread a 3/4 inch eye bolt in. once
the eye bolt was in, i welded everything
together, cleaned it allup, and had them powdered
coated black. i bolted them the to the same existing
bolt holes for my bumper. i had to cut holes in the
plastic air dam beside my driving lights. they work great
. i use them with shackles (7/8"). even pulled out my
buddy in a full size bowtie haha!!

How close were they to the holes in the lower bumper.

They must have hit the body around the radiator and could not get the nut on the bolt. I noticed that it was close with the body lift.

Sorry you had the make two trips to the dealer!
