 Subject: difference between 4wd/2wd v8 tranny?

I'm not a dodge owner or guru, just finding some info for a friend.
He owns a 2000 4x2 4.7 v8 dakota
I need to know is the following.
Do all dakotas have the shifter on the column?
What model transmission is in this truck?
What model transmission is in a same year 4wd v8 truck?
are they the same? if not where are the differences (i.e. bellhousings..etc..etc.)
Can someone provide me with e-mail addresses for indiviudals who have completed 2wd - 4wd conversions/solid axle WITHOUT swapping engines?
as well as solid axle conversions.
I'm aware that the 2wd and 4wd frames are in fact different so a 2wd/4wd IFS conversion is not applicable. A solid axle conversion could be within reason however.

All I really know about the tranny is I believe it is the same except that the tail shaft is shorter on the 4x4 tranny.
