Subject: Off Road Light Install How-to??
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey is there anywhere on the net that shows how to install Off Road Lights?

I plan on getting a Black CrashGuard in the front and put 2 off-road lights in the front.

I can figure out the mounting and stuff but the electrical part is alittle confusing.

Do u hook them up striaght to the battery or what?..I already have a 4-Guage wire hooked up my amp for the subs.

Thankx for all the help everyone...

KC's website has install guides for typical installations. You can find them here:

Should get you started anyway!

Hey Thankx Blizzard

One Question.

They Talk about this "White" wire and it must be connected to ur Low Beam circut , High Beam Circut , or 12+V source.

I'd like to have the lights Come on with the low beams or have them come on when i want. (no lights on and just put the KC lights come on)
Not sure how I want to do it.

How do u have urs wired?..

and What wires do I need to splice into to get them on the "low" and "high" beam circuts?

thankx

it sounds like the white wire when powered turns them on. If you want them to come on whenever you want, (hi/low beams or lights off) just wire the white wire to a switch, then from the switch to 12v+ batt. Just don't leave them on by accident.

Just like Clevite said ... wire 'em to the switch and you don't have to dink around with headlight power.

Josh, do you still have the boxes or instructions? I have four KC's also, and everything turned out fine, after I read all the paperwork. I'd go check it out on my truck for ya, but it's dark out. If I'm not mistaking, If you look real close on the relay, there are little symbols that show you what goes where. I may be thinking of the PIAA's though. If I get back from work when it's still light out, I'll try and remember to check.
Also, where did you run your wires to the lights? I'm getting a rollbar and moving the lights from the roof to the bars. Is there a good place to hide the wires?
Good Luck!

TRUCK IT UP!

The relay is simply a switch that keeps your high amp wires as short as possible, and allows the use of a low amp switch for actuation. All relays are pretty much wired the same way. There should be at least 4 terminals:

1. Main power in: from the power source. Straight off the battery works fine. Gauge depends on the accessory draw. Make sure you have a fuse close to the power source.

2. Main power out: Directly to the accessory. Some relays will have two of these.

3. Ground.

4. Actuation: Any triggering power source, can be a low amp SPST switch in the dash. Light gauge wire like 20-22 gauge is all you need. For fog lights, use the low beam wire as a trigger. For driving/high beams, use the high beam wire as a trigger.

By using a DPDT switch, it's easy to wire the relay to come on with or without the main lights, or not at all.

Fog lights, by their design, should only be used with low beam. When used with high beams they provide no additional long range lighting, and might be somewhat deceptive to the driver. Most of the time drivers have them on just to piss off the other drivers.

If two work and two don't, have one of the following things wrong:
1. Bad ground connections for the two that don't come on.

2. Bad 'hot' connections for the two that don't come on.

3. Bad bulbs in the two that don't come on. (have you tried swapping bulbs with the ones that are working?)

Are these lights used? If so, maybe there are broken/ corroded wires/ connections inside the lights.

hope this helps.
