Subject: What size ring gear in the front axle?
IP: Logged

Message:
Is it a Dana axle setup? If so what size ring gear? I am afraid of these independent front drive axles in the smaller trucks because when you add four wheeling, bigger tires and tough terrain your usually asking for alot of trouble. Also what model is the T-case behind the 4.7 and 5.9 and how much abuse will that take as well.
Thanks,
Bryan

What size ring gears can be found out by looking under the truck at the rear axle. there should be some white cloth tape on the axle tube drivers side. If that is gone there is a metal tag on the cover or it will be stamped into the diff housing it self. As far as what kind lf axle the front is. It is the dana 44 ind. style.

I was relatively certain that the 97+ Dakotas used a Dana 35C center section. I believe that equates to a 7.5 inch ring gear, maybe 8 inches...

Matt, where did you see that it was a 44? Oh, wait a minute, something is coming to me... was it changed in 2000?

Thanks,
Marc

Four Wheeler magazine did a test on the new QC 4x4 in the Jan. issue and they say the front diff is a dana 30. The Ram has the dana 44 up front I believe
