Subject: Nerf Bars and which ones to get
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm intrested in getting a par of nerf bars.

I've been looking at prices and different models and stuff. but I'm wondering which one is best?

I've looked at Westin, Grizzly, and Rhino bars they all look the same but differ in price.

I'm looking to get a par in Black.

Hint's/ Tips/ suggestions are all welcome.

Thanks

Nerf bars are nice indeed....but all the Westins I have seen in black rust like the titanic sitting under 5000 feet of water.

I would love to have a set on my truck but can't justify the cost to have them rust in 2 years.

I've got westins on mine.. I like them but, they are starting to rust.. only place you can see it is where it mounts to the body bolts... I almost bought some from http://www.smittybiltinc.com/ They attach directly to the frame and they are alot heavier.-- Hop

I too have Westin and like how they mount. They're the chrome Signature Series and at only a few months old they obviously still look very new.

They have a 5 year rust warranty, but I think that's only for the chrome bars themselves and not the mounts. At any rate, at the first sign of rust on the mounts themselves, I plan to just remove and repaint replace those.

I too was looking into Westin but from the sounds of It I should stay away from them? I actually am looking for both Nerf Bars and a good 1-piece grill-guard. Should they be fromt he same company or doe it not really matter. Who makes the best bars and gaurds?

2THEXTRM,
Did you get the wheels and tires on your wifes truck yet!?

I`m putting on my body lift today , so wheels and tires should be on by Tues.. at the latest.

BTW , I think I`m going to get a set of nerf bars and fab them to tuck up close to the body to help hide my frame after the b-lift , and I was wondering how much I should expect to pay for them. I`m looking for chrome ,or stainless to fit a QC.

Thanks ,
Scott

The tires came on Thursday, Falken Ziex and they are sweet looking. The wheels are supposed to be here by Tuesday, but the truck is going to the paint shop on Tuesday for a couple days anyway to repaint the hood due to some acid rain spots and I found while washing it and high speed polish the entire truck to get rid of little scratches all over the truck from what looks like a stiff snow brush the dealer used(duh, they musta forgot it was a soft paint Dakota and should have used nothing but soft cotton brushes:). That sux since the truck is only a week and a half old but at least they are fixing it and for free are painting the black top of front sport bumper to match truck which is cool. Saved me $150 to have front bumper monotoned:) Should have everything all done and on for this weekend hopefully.

If you are going to fab the bars so they are closer to body after body lift like I did, you should get bars that mount to frame instead of the Westin's that mount to body mounts, the choices are limited. I have did alotta homework on which kind/brand to use before I bought and could not find a feasible way to make the body mount type work to be sturdy without making a custom bracket and welding them directly to body mount which I don't suggest.

I ended up using Manik black full length bars, not sure if you noticed them in my pics with the roll bars on, but they are nice and tight to body, most don't even notice them unless I point them out. Had to do some cutting of the front support braces that came with bars since the torsion bar mount on frame changed for 2001 and Manik hasn't updated their brackets yet(learned this after I got them since application guide stated 97+). They do make chrome also, I paid close to $200 for the black ones from Truckaddons.com so you would probably be looking at double that for chrome. My pic album shows some pics of how I fabbed the brackets to work by basically using a custom 3" spacer between the uppper and lower brackets with lengthened bolts to hold it all together. I have had them on now for a couple months and they are sturdy as hell, don't think I would be testing them out with some rock crawling though since they are still cosmetic due to thin sidewall of tubing, need the heavy solid rock bars for that:) Good-luck with the body lift and if any problems or questions while installing, just post a HELP thread on the Raised Dakotas board to get a quick response since their is enough people here who have did it now and should be able to help you out!

Thanks for all the info.

My body lift is complete so tommorrow I should have my new wheels and tires on...time permitting!

The lift was a piece of cake! It only took 4hrs from start to finish and we took our time AND ate lunch. The friends that helped me have done a bunch of lifts so that helped alot.

With my truck being black , the frame isn`t real noticable , but I do think I`ll get some nerf bars in the future...frame mounted ones.

Thanks again.

If you have a body lift on your truck and you are wanting to put nerf bars on it, i stronglly reccomend that you do not use a nerf bars that bolt up to the body mount. I have Westin's on my CC Dakota and it pathetic how far below the body the nerf bars sit. i'm in the process of modifying them and i am going to weld them straight to the frame. The other draw back is it makes the truck look lower, which really bothers me.

The picture on this link shows my truck with no nerf bars.

I have a set of black Westin nerf bars for a CC Dakota for sale if anyone is interested. I added a body lift so I took them off. (They hung down too low with the lift on.) They were $260 new. I will sell them for $150 plus shipping. Here is a pic of them on my truck before the lift. If you some close-up pics of them, let me know.

Yes, 2THEXTRM had a set of Manik full length bars that he said were pretty easy to modify. If the N-Fab bars don't come out pretty soon, I think that is what I will get. But I really like the looks of the N-Fab bars, and no modifications are neccessary.

I had some that mounted to the frame and all I did was drill the hole up three inches and remount them. Then took a sawzall and cut the extra off. It's easy to do. I do lik ethose wide rails though. Do those Steel horse ones mount to the body or the frame? It doesn't really say.
