Subject: 4x4 revs, but the tires don't spin?
IP: Logged

Message:
My step brother has a 97 dodge dakota 3.9 liter automatic, 4x4 of course. He's been stuck in some bad mud a few times, and when he tried to rev it up, then engine would rev high, but NONE of the tires would spin. I suggested his converter might be loose and going bad, but I'm certainly no expert. Do you guys have any opinions or maybe another place where I could ask? Thanks a lot in advance

You might have been in between 4 high and 4 low, which is neutral in your transfer case. I don't think that anything is wrong with the transfer case but maybe. I would say to check that first.

Also, the mud he was in may have been too thick and the tires may not have been able to overcome it. The motor would be revving but the tires would not be able to move. He doesn't exactly have all the power in the world for being a 4X4 V6.

Heheeh.... looks who's talkin.

Seriously though.. the wheels could have just been stuck in the mud and not be able to move. That has happened to me before w/ my truck. Also if he doesn't have Limited Slip then only 2 of the 4 tires would spin if he was stuck in the mud. If both of those were STUCK like mud all around them then they might not move at all.

If all 4 tires were just in water though.. and they weren't spinning then I'd start getting worried.
