May be a dumb question, but how off-road worthy are stock daks? I am lookin at a '02 club cab sport plus 4.7 auto 4x4 and was just curious how they do stock.

That's about my only complaint as well.

Not much ground clearance & not many accessories. Other then that it's a very nice truck off-road. Smaller then a full sized but still has the power.

If off roading is your biggest requirement. Get something with a solid front axle. That gives you a LOT more options for lifts and tires and such.

It's not the bolt pattern that's the biggest problem it's the fact that you can't do anything with IFS suspension and this has Rack & Pinion steering. Which is totally differen't from MOST off-roading vehicles.

Honistly as much as I hate to say it if you want a vehicle for off-roading.. Jeep is the way to go unless you off-road in mud in which case you'd want a full-sized truck with a solid front axle.

The actual Dakota ROCKS but it's aftermarket where we get killed :-\

I agree with knobby the Dakota is a great truck with no aftermarket
V8 power
Stable midsize frame
fairly tough drivetrain

The weakness is in the IFS. It should be stronger for this size truck. A Dana 35, thats what a 4cyl jeep has, yet a Ram 1500 comes with a Dana 44.
Dodge made the Dakota bigger in 97 and wanted to keep the IFS to keep the Durango smooth. The Durango is for the IFS people, the cherokee is for the solid axle people. That is dodges SUV market spread. The Dakota has to stick with whatever they decide on for the Durango. Since their is nothing bigger than the Dana 35 thats what they slapped under the truck.

If you want to keep it stock (no lift other than a couple inches and keep the tires to 33" max) you won't have a problem with the differential or any other part of the truck. If you want bigger than 33's and hard core rock craling get a 93-2001 ram with the solid axle or a 2002-2003 2500 ram and get a solid axle and you can wheel the hell out of it.

i think there are some guys running 32's on their 2000+ Daks on stock lift but a 3 inch body lift wouldn't hurt......

I have 32X11.5X15 on my truck. Tires rub the frame a little bit but not much. Truck is stock as well. No lift.

The only thing about running 32 is it throws the speedometer off, about 3 miles per hour.

Stock dakota is very good off-road. I have taken my 02 QC 4x4 w/3.55 & no LSD (265/70R16's) over very tuff ground. I defy anybody to do Xtreme rock crawling with stock vehicles (no, hummers, etc. don't count). For average 4x4ing, dakota measures up well against all comers, including explorer, forefunner, escape, sport trac, pathfinder, etc. Off-roading is not all about huge tires & high lift. It is about enjoying the out-of-back and thinking your way around and through trouble spots.

I agree with Shunpike, I have had a lot of fun with my 2001 CC 4X4, I could use a little more ground clearance...thats why I'm looking into the PA 3" and 33's. But power is great, its stable, the cup holders keep my beer from spilling even at high speed runs, and most of all I can beat my wife in her L.L.Bean Outback when we race off-road.

FYI guys.. I didn't get picture of him off-roading.. But we had a '95 4x2 LOWERED wheeling with us yesterday.. Sad thing is .. He's the only one that didn't have any problems. (ok so he didn't go threw any mud or ruts or anything.. but it was still funny to see him out there)

Anyway the stock Dakota 4x4 does fine the only shortcomming is the groundclearance created by the IFS. (In my opinion)
