Can anyone help diagnos my idle/fuel system issue? I own a 1997 5.2L dakota. Occasionally when my truck sits for say eight hours, it will start fine and I can rev the engine as normal, but the engine will not hold an idle. I'll give it gas for a few and the problem goes away, and thoughout the day the truck acts normal. No codes have been thrown. It seems as though there is as clog that loosens as the truck warms.

I have a similar vehicle (year/lump) but w/o your problem.

I can only guess based on time spent trying to figure out similar problems on my BMW and SAAB...both Bosch port injection, so maybe not relevant.

I'd suspect first a vacuum leak. Look for old/cracked hoses. I just peeked at mine and...gads! Lots of hose replacement coming up RSN! It can be hard to catch these. Damn near impossible sometimes.

next, i'd suspect the injector pattern at idle is not right...dirty. the $10 fix: Try a can of Sea Foam in a half tank of gas (or half a can in 1/4 tank...see below). I've had this stuff clear up hesitation coming off idle on my SAAB. I'd also put a half can into the engine thru the vacuum line (the brake booster line should work. you will need help to keep the engine running while sucking the stuff into the manifold. when about half the can is sucked in, shot it down for an hour. Then restart. LOTS and lots of smoke. Don't do this where someone is apt to call the FD or call the cops<G> When you restart it will smoke badly for 4-6 minutes or so. But it will clear and it will clean out intake system (but not the injectors...that's the stuff in the gas). put the stuff that's left in the gas tank.

third, when was the last time you replaced plugs/wires/cap/rotor/air cleaner? (about $100 in parts these days).

FWIW

The Haynes manual covers the idle control module.
