Subject: illegal mods on your truck
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, i was driving to my girlfriends house today when a cop pulled me over for no apparant reason. At the end of the conversation with him, he came to the conclusions, i had no front lisence plate (illegal in british columbia), illegal taillights (the clear ones, not euros) and i had illegally tinted windows (reg cab with side windows tinted at 35%). He didnt give me a fine, but i have to go to get a vehicle inspection that costs 80 bucks. im not worried about the lights cause i have my originals and its takes like two minutes to change them, the lisence plate i guess i will have to screw on and put holes in my bumper(ahhhh) unless anyone knows a way without having to, but the tinted windows i think i am screwed with. I was wondering if anyone else has had these problems from cops, and what have you done. I really want to keep my tinted windows, but i want to make it so cops cant tell, by rolling up my window a half inch and seeing the difference from where the tint starts. Has many other people been pulled over for illegal mods on their trucks?? sorry for such a long message, i was just really really choked, because they were all mods i liked and now i have to go and take them all off. Do cops have nothing better to do???

Haha, i like that idea, because i dont like the look of the plate on the front either. ill have to find out if there are rules like that in b.c. Does it cost you any more in insurance to have the plates as 18000lbs?

heres an idea about your license plate....

get two suction cups (like the ones that hold the "baby on board" signs to the windows) and mount your license plate to the inside of your windshield. That way you have no permanent mounting on your bumper!

I hate that front plate in my bumper, so I had a guy at work (body shop) putty up the holes and paint it, so now you cant tell there were those screw holes there. I know here in WI it is illegal but I have yet to be stopped for it (knock on wood).

Thanks for all the replys. Always helpfull to here other peoples ideas. To fix my problems, i did a few things. I put my lisence back on, but i installed it in the opening on the lower valence with a metal bar behind it and have bolts attached to it, that way there are no holes in my bumper, it looks good too!! which is a bonus. For the clear taillights, i bought some red reflector tape, and put a strip across the bottom of each. i still cant figure out what to do with the tint though, probably just end up taking it off, and then put it back on after the vehicle inspection. Anyways, sorry for another long post. Thanks for the ideas though!

In most states it's illegal to have your license plates displayed in the windshield or rear window of a vehicle.

The Wisconsin State Troopers are the ones you enforce the license plate, lights, and window tint laws. The local departments don't care so much about those. However, they can/will use them as a reason to pull you over if they're having a bad day.

Yeah I have had a ticket for no front LP, good idea greg... Last week I got pulled over again but this time because I fit a discription of someone who had been braking out windows, I had my neons on, front and rear light covers, still no front lp and windows dark as can be and the cop was like, "I like your truck, but try no to be seen with those neons on, you could get fined." Thats all he said. So I guess I lucked out.

Cops pull you over, because lots of people that mod their trucks are younger and often times (especially at night), drinking and driving or doing drugs. Their just trying to keep the rif-raf off the street.

If you're not doing anything wrong, they just ticket you for illegal mods, so they didn't waste their time pulling you over.

Don't take it personal.

Hey,

If you're not breaking the law, then you have nothing to worry about.

Getting a ticket is entirely up to YOU! Don't drive with illegal mods, and you won't get a ticket. Duh!

Don't blame cops for enforcing laws that you break.

Cops don't make the laws, they just enforce them.

Again, don't take it personal. Law is the law.

cops should enforce moving violations, not mods on your vehicle unless it is a serious safety problem, not just some COP saying its unsafe w/ no proof

Madmaxin22 - Cops enforce all laws applicable in your state. If they just enforced moving violations, who would catch all the other criminals?
Also, cops don't just "say" your mods are unsafe. There are laws in your state that say they are unsafe, based on data. If you don't like/believe that your mod is unsafe, collect some data of your own and speak with the lawmakers in your state to have the laws changed.
How did this board turn into a cop haters club? Not a cops fault if you know you're breaking the law.

Well the tint is illegal for one reason: say a cop goes to pull over some yahoo and he cant see in the guys window? WOuld you want to walk up to a car with someone who could possibly have a gun, and might shoot you? That is why this law was started. I have tint, i am not a cop, i have been warned about my tint, loud exhaust, asked if i have illegal engine mods, and asked about how low my car is....all of which are illegal in the wonderful state of California. Be nice, and courtious to them when they pull you over and just say you bought the car how it is, and obviously that you didnt know it was illegal. You would be surprised how well it works out for you. I think lowering a car should be illegal though, unless you scrape the ground, that is just dumb...
FWIW there goes my two pennies

All this talk about the law and it being enforced got me thinking. There is the 'intent' of the law, then there is the non-thinking lughead cop who can take the interpretation too far. The majority of the 'mod' laws simply give cops a 'reason' to pull you over...SOME really are safety issues..but rarely. I respect that to a point...but going by the book in most cases is simply harrasing and once again proofs that only certain people become cops in the first place...those who have a need for power and influence and aren't smart enough to go into politics. They are also not smart enough to realize the reasoning behind the law.

Example: Light covers being illegal

Intent of law: Some covers prevent enough light from emitting as to be a serious safety issue...many SMOKE covers are like this. I have seen some covers on brake lights which make it very hard to see when the brakes are activated, particularly during the day.

Being an ass: Having custom covers that DON'T prevent sufficient light emission...and having mister officer go 'by the law' and harrass you anyway, because understanding the intent of the law is too complicated for his tiny little brain...which usually matches other size inadeqacies...once again prooving the majority of police officials are simply tryin to gain power there because they lack it elswhere.

...and meanwhile, while mr. officer sits in his cruiser sipping coffee and eating donuts, waiting for the next car to go by at 40 in a 35mph zone...a house gets broken into cause the patrols are not frequent enough to deter criminals

Around here, 35% is the limit, but I've got 20% all around (reg. cab) and I never get messed with.:)

I even almost got pulled over the other night for speeding, but luckily, the cop decided to not pull me over. Instead, he pulled up next to me and said, "Slow down, man!" So respectfully, and gratefully, I did.:D And he didn't even tell me anything about the tint.

you guys have nothing to complain about...

until you go to oahu and attempt to modify your vehicle, you don't know pain.

they have recon (reconstruction) permits for lowering a vehicle any amount from stock (about $45), affadavits for stuff like exhaust, intakes etc (varying fees).

all of these permits and statements add up. in addition to fee for a state safety inspection ($15), plus regular registration fees (military discount-$25)

heck, even rollpans are illegal for trucks...

WTF kinda crap is that??

That's just ridiculous... I mean, around here, they get after us if our sytems are too loud (I mean if they hear so much as A LITTLE bass, they pull us over and warn us.) and I've heard that neon underglow lights are illegal, but I see them quite often around here too.

I live in Mesquite, TX which is a suburb of Dallas.
