Subject: 1st timer, 2/3 drop help!

Hey all, this is my first time on this site, and I love it. Here's my questions. I have a 2001 standard cab Dak with a 4 banger and a manual transmission. I want to give it a 2/3 drop. I'm gonna do springs in the front, but what should I do about the rear? Lowering blocks, or shackles and hangers? I read on DJM's site that you have to tighten the blocks every few months. I don't really want to have to do that, but I read that shackles/hangers aren't that good. What should I do? Also, which would give me the best ride? Thanks in advance.

Hello the 2/3 is a good choice. Put blocks on the back. But rember you will need to change the front shocks too also the back.. Try to find the Toxic gas shocks.. They are stiff at first but they set a good ride height. The truck will ride stiff no matter what you do to it. The gas shocks adjust to the springs ride height. Dont leave the stock ones you will have problems... Blocks do have to be tightend about 2 or three times before they are set. Mine did. The other kits are a bad idea. The other kits will tear up your truck and they ride like crap. hope you have good luck... reply back payton

I would do shackles and hangers because that is what I did on my dakota that has a 3/4 drop. I have had no problems with my drop and it's been lowered for about 5 years. My advice is stick with springs in the front and shackles and hangers for the rear, blocks are the cheap way of lowering in my opinion. Also change the shocks all the way around for a smoother ride, I use ground force shocks and I like them. I also c-notched the rear for more clearance between the axle and the frame to minimize bottoming out, it gave me an extra 3 inches. There's my advice, hope it helps.

I have been checking around. I think I'm gonna go with a 2/4 drop from BellTech. I'll probably do springs in front, and shackles & hangers in the back. I don't want to go out every month and check to make sure the lowering blocks are tight. I've checked through Stylin, and a kit for a 2001 Dak. is about $499.95 including Nitro drop shocks. A friend and I are gonna install it. If anyone has any experience with this kit, let me know. Thanks for all the replies. I'll let you know when it's on. One more thing, does anyone know of any Dakota clubs in Southern Cali, Long Beach?

I have and recomend the beltech 2/4 drop i have on my '00 Club Cab. It dosnt cost too much and it includes everything including new shocks. I also got Hotchkis anti sway bars front and rear for the same price but they were the best thing i have done to my Dak by far,(better than every bolt on engine part the I have). The combo of the 2/4 and the anti sway bars is GREAT, def worth the money if you like taking corners really fast :) and also I was gona start a dakota club in north OC but my friends sold their dakotas :( Im still down though

i am debating on putting a 2/3 or 2/4 drop on my 02 quadcab, my tires 265/35/22s. i was wondering if i could go with a lower drop. secone i what is a good set up to go with ie shackles/blocks for a little bit smoother ride. what are good shocks.. i plan on going with air shocks in the back so i can air up the rear if i need to put a heavy load in the back ie. 4 wheeler.

I have the Hotchkis suspension. It is a performance suspension and the added benefit is lowering your Dak 2/3. It's not cheap. It is a stiff ride. Hopefully, for X-mas, I can get Hotchkis tuned Bilsteins shocks.

hey what ever u do dont do the shackles on the back we did that and it screwed up completely, it ended up raising the back up 4 inches, and making it really stiff, and with living in western ky, it was really screwed up

hey this is to who ever started this forum question. my name is joe and i'm new to the forum. but i have a 1999 dakota. i put in the quick drop by DJM. regardless the company GET NEW SHOCKS. also drop the gas tank out and take the bed off. it is so much easier. the hangers will have to come off. that requires a torch or grinder. coils are good for the front. but if your in there cut the rivets off of the ball joints and get new ones (ebay...good place in canada) the new ride hight will agravate them.
other than that make sure you put a jack under the lower control arm because the coil will fly out there is still pressure. seriously my truck is on jack stands and being dropped and a dump box. if you have questions or pics just email me or call me always willing to help!

I got the DJM Control arms and shackles and hangers from stylin concepts on sale. I love the lowered look, i went witht he 3/5 kit with toxic drop shocks. Rides a hell of a lot nicer than those people who do the springs and blocks. I didnt need to c-notch either. Control arms was simple to do, and the hardest part about the shackles is getting the old rivets out where the bolts go. good luck

in a 1996 you should be able to still use a spindle. look into it at like stylin concepts.com or other places. i would use a new lower spindles because you have a lesser chance if camber problems and alignment problems too. the cheapest is to use coils but they can loosen up and ride like crap too. i would use a lower control arm or spindle. spindle would give you the best ride. and get toxic shocks

You must have done something totally wrong. I just did a 4" shackle drop on mine and it dropped the rear-end.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one
